Popular...popular Scratchers...Popularity?

Hey fellow Scratchers, I just wanted to say that why do you guys want to be popular? Recently, I've been seeing many Scratchers wishing to be popular by spamming, etc, etc. However, I'm mostly concerned that popularity is not everything. Scratch is about having fun and sharing good quality projects with friends. As Scratch's motto is, imagine, program, and share...between friends and other Scratchers.  smile

What do you guys think...? Is popularity really everything on Scratch or is it having a fun time with sharing among friends and getting better at programming?

In other words...
1.) Help stop spamming
2.) Set your Scratch goals to with Sharing projects not based on views and not so much on getting onto front page.
3.) And, most of all, have fun!!  big_smile

I like having fun on Scratch. Thats what I do it for. If I was on here for popularity, I would have given up long ago. All I care is that good projects get frount paged.

Re: Popular...popular Scratchers...Popularity?

popularity is an illusion created by your own low-self esteem
at least at school
but seriously, the low self esteem is actually pretty close to the truth
i lost my train of thought so now i'm done yeah

You're, you mean, and anyways, people do look at the Scratchers, who are not seen as well. Well, at least I do! Try setting goals on Scratch to help others. For example, I've seen cheddargirl and a few others having their forum signatures with links of projects of their friends! And, I occasionally surf around Scratch and comment on projects that most people miss seeing. One good Scratcher is chazmaniandevel, for instance.  smile

Unfortunatly, yes. I don't spam. Never will. I just post and comment in a nice manner and well, average 30 views per new project I make. Thats since about the begining of the school year (September).

Re: Popular...popular Scratchers...Popularity?

I agree!  I would like to get popular, but thats only so people can see my Void Ed. games in stead of a 5 sec animation that isn't even funny on the front page.  I would never stoop so low as to spam; I just let things play out as they will.

Re: Popular...popular Scratchers...Popularity?

Yep! I thoroughly enjoy most projects on front paged, especially the unique ones from featured section, but some hardly have any quality and are spammed to get on front paged. There's one Scratcher in my mind who has spammed "invisibly" to get his/her projects onto front paged, and only the people who have been spammed by this Scratcher know this...like me. XD

XD, well, not just friends, I try to show off people's projects that could use more attention.  smile

I'm finding this technique of featuring projects in my siggy seems to bring some more attention to lesser-known projects; at the same time, it encourages me to take the time out to go exploring for some nice projects in Scratch instead of relying only on the channels on the front page. I encourage you guys to try it out, you'd be surprised at the results.  smile

Anyway, I browse the main site very often. My favorites change very, very often.

Thats funny. When I read this i was reminded of Archmage's "boast" (Which was really just a fact; I don't think he cared that much) that any project he put in his signature would get frontpage...

Re: Popular...popular Scratchers...Popularity?

The only reason I try to be popular is because I believe the front page needs more projects with effort.  It doesn't matter if they're mine but I can aid the cause.  And not just the front page, but the site in general needs some notable games.  So I strive to do my best.

yeah so griven was up there once but he never made it back there
also griven didnt work for me at all i kept skipping everywhere

also i saw some stuff in here about spam which may or may not be directed at me even though i didnt add it to any of the galleries in fact i deleted my stuff from most of them

plus almost every "famous" scratcher has at one point openly admitted to spamming to get followers

I spent a while and was done a while ago on what probarbly is the biggest project I'll ever make, and it got 2000 odd views and featured. When I made another project that might have been considered even better (and took a whole year non-stop to make) it didn't even make 100.

Re: Popular...popular Scratchers...Popularity?

This is how I look at it: If I put up a project with just a few notes in it, I don't care if it doesn't get front paged. However, if I make something incredible, then a little recognition would be nice. But I love Scratch, and love programming for it, so even if I wasn't popular, I just love tinkering with the project. And the best bit of all? Testing it.

I might return for a little while.

Re: Popular...popular Scratchers...Popularity?

Let me go out the certain 'stages' I think most scratchers go through.

First they just fiddle about and experiment with scratch.
Second their projects start getting a little better
Third, they spend a long time on projects and want them to get noticed
Fourth, they are obsessed with popularity.
Finally, they either quit, get popular for good projects or start to not care and just have fun.
