making custom blocks

I'd like to make a few custom sensing blocks to make it possible for us to use home heartbeat sensors/devices with scratch. HHB is an 802.15.4 wireless awareness system that has $30 wireless sensors and mesh networking built in its got a simple usb interface as well on the base station.

We thought it'd be fun to make blocks so that kids could connect an hhb system to their scratch programs and turn their entire house/classroom into a distributed sensing and response system for funky networked/distributed physical/digital games and such (think hackysack meets breakout with doors and other things around the room being deflectors for example).

I can't seem to find any obvious ways to make custom blocks though. Is there a way to do this?
