My new OS, this time in VB! SS_Crystal

Hey guys (and girls) from misc!
I haven't been posting in this forum for a while. Sooo.... on to the purpose of this thread.

As some of you know, I have a passion for OS simulations. I've been creating OSSims since 2006, and continued making some in Scratch once I joined.

Of course, Scratch -- still being an awesome programming language which I still use -- did not suit my exaggerate needs and I transitioned to Visual Basic. My first OS in VB, SilviSoft Crystal, has been released a few days ago and I thought I might as well share it with the community. After all, it's Scratch that really opened up my possibilities!

SilviSoft Crystal Home Basic is a professional, Windows-like Operating System Overshell (runs on top of Windows) which has heaps of programs (well, compared to Scratch OS's) and great personalization possibilities.

You can download SilviSoft Crystal right here: SSCR Overview

Enjoy and, Scratch On!

I am developing my own Visual Basic Os called Galaxy Os (With Programming Freak)

I enjoyed your os greatly but here is a list of bugs you may want to consider fixing:

1: It was tooth grindingly slow
2: Your web browser was hardly state of the art see geckofx.org for a proper browser control
3: Your app management system needed more refining
4: Try updating the window style, I use devcomponents Office 2007 style form for my window manager

Here are some things I liked:

1: I liked your installer
2: I liked the way it gives you updates on a laptops battery (How did you do that ??)
and I enjoyed the login screen  smile

Best Regards

I'm also posting from SilviSoft Crystal!

If there was a love-it button, I would click on it.

Wow guys, thanks for all your support and compliments! Here's a couple responses.

I know. I've definitely made better browsers, but I simply couldn't be bothered. Maybe I'll make something better for Firedust (next OS)
3: Your app management system needed more refining
I didn't find any flaws in that, it was just how I liked it!
4: Try updating the window style, I use devcomponents Office 2007 style form for my window manage
rThat sounds interesting! can i have a link or something?

Here are some things I liked:

1: I liked your installer
Thanks. I made it as easy as possible  smile
2: I liked the way it gives you updates on a laptops battery (How did you do that ??)
In VB.NET, use the SystemInformation.PowerStatus class!
and I enjoyed the login screen
the one in firedust is even better  big_smile

my responses in blue  big_smile

Again, I really hope you enjoy and prepare for firedust. I personally think it will be a great progress from Crystal and Sim OS's in general!

It was slow, but that's Microsoft's fault, they made VB.NET slow. And this is a 2.10GHz computer with 2.75GB ram.

Re: My new OS, this time in VB! SS_Crystal

This thing is too awesome for words. I don't have any problems with speed, it is just as fast/slow as the Win 7 it is running on top of. I have a 2.4 Ghz laptop with 4GB of RAM.

I can tell you really based the visual design on Windows 7, but there is nothing wrong with that, Win 7 is beautiful.  smile

Also, I think it is especially awesome you added the batch mode to Console, considering SIMPL-DOS (in my sig) is programmed in it. The only way it could be any more awesome is if it was bootable. (Pssst, try using the FreeDOS kernel, and AUTOEXEC to load Crystal automatically. I can give you the files if you can't find the FD kernel.)

P.S, This was posted from SilviNet.  big_smile

Thanks, and glad to hear that it's fast on at least one computer! It might be the RAM then, as VB.NET manages graphical elements worse than a 2-year-old.

Yeah, I based the taskbar design on Windows 7 and added some kind of AeroSnap feature.  It's because I was too lazy to make my own design and I thought the feature was great (respectively  lol  )

Yeah, the batch mode was good. But there's not many commands as a starter and I haven't even started the SS Console Code part  tongue

Unfortunately, it would take a great deal of refining to make it bootable, as it is still a Windows executable and I don't think that can run on Freedos. I could, in theory, re-make it for Freedos but it would take way too long and it would take all the fun out of its programming. I like VB.NET too much  big_smile

Oh, last thing, great to see your posting from SilviNet too!  tongue
I really need to refine the browser then, add tabs and stuff like I did with the stand-alone SilviNet!

Well, that's got slightly better specs than mine. Maybe some to do with the graphics card?

Really, even though my computer has respectable processor speed, it runs like a 1.2 Ghz machine, because this thing is fully loaded with 2 1/2 years of crud, and unused software. The RAM probably what is keeping little toddler VB.NET out of trouble. xD

As for booting, it really isn't that hard. FreeDOS can run Windows EXEs just fine (to my knowledge). I will check on that, and come back with some ideas.

EDIT: I am already back, with half-good and bad news. The bad news is that FreeDOS does not natively run Win32 applications. The half-good news is that there are some so-called "DOS extenders" that will let FreeDOS run Win32 console apps, and some GUI apps. Whether or not SS Crystal will work, I don't know. I can test it if you want me to.

HeHe... Try making a new thread in All about Scratch or Advanced Topics for your question (depending on whther you want to make a Scratch OS or Half-real OS, respectively).

Yeah, I've never seen a 4GB Ram computer in real life (almost though, a 3GB one  tongue  )

For the booting part, that sounds great! I'll have a look at it when I get back home tonight/tomorrow, and of course feel free to get a head start on me by already trying it out! (you need the .NET Framework DLL's though; I can't remember exactly where you find them. I think it's in Program Files\Frameworks\.NET. You might have to slot in a little Microsoft directory  tongue  ).

I really hope this can be done!

Now days, 4GB is fairly standard for new mid-range notebooks and lowish-end desktops. But when my comp was new, you could only get 4GB in desktops and big 8-12 lb "desktop replacement" laptops (like mine).

I will mess around with booting tonight, and see if I can get it working. If you mean link you to the DOS extender, the Wikipedia article is here.

You can't make an OS in vb.net but you can make a GUI to cover the horrible MS one.

If I was to make one I would;

Create a taskbar that I want and hide the MS one.
Add lots of quick access features.
Start the program on login.

Unfortunately, it seems as if that's not going to be enough to run something like crystal.
Oh well, I guess I'll stick to emulating OS's and simply improve upon Windows  smile
