Right, people keep advertising 3D has if it were the technology of the future and it really isn't that great, it's pretty much the same effect you get with the good ol' anaglyph glasses, just slightly improved.

Which is why I may skip the 3DS (and cause I own 3 already).

I saw a trial at target. they are cool, but I wouldn't get it even if I could because there isn't a large ammount of 3d channels. I'm getting 3DS

They should at least figure out how to get rid of the glasses before claiming that it's so great.
Nintendo did it right by making the 3DS glasses-free. They can't yet achieve the same effect on a full-size screen, but it's likely to happen in the next 10 years.
In the meantime, what's the use? The glasses are annoying, and no channels come in 3D anyway.

3D is useless especially now. Not just the glasses. When movies use 3D, it's always gimmicky and they don't pay much attention to artistry of the shot. When it's on TV, there's only a couple 3D channels. When it's a 3D camera, you need glasses to see it and a 3D TV. Nintendo has the right idea. The 3D effect they're going after is a bit different from 3D TVs. It's interactive 3D.
Um...so yeah basically agree with you all.

In TV the effect is so subtle if you don't gimmick.
With a handheld, the already glorified graphics of many systems, can be enhanced in a greater way. And due to the fact that only one person needs to see, they can implement the same technology, attempted but failed on TVs due to a wider viewing range.

I have a 3D TV. The effect is alright. However I have played GT5 in 3D mode! and that was sweet. (Needed more damage effects and things that fly everywhere). TV was not that expensive as it came with bonus stuff.
Cost about $2000 AU
Got:
42" LED 3D Samsung TV (Inital Price $4000 +)
25" LED TV (Inital Price $1200+)
4 glasses (Inital Price $100 + each)
4 * 3D movies (Inital Price $50 + each)
You can force anything into 3D but those that use 3D are the best.
Software = Glitchy but I have never updated the TV (There might be fixes)
PS3 can use the 3D and there are games like GT5 which have proper 3D effects.

I personally am not willing to buy a new TV when there are only a handful of 3d channels and a couple 3d-movies: That also require a 3d blu-ray player.
