Shadow's Super form was originally "Hyper Shadow" and he was silver, but SEGA changed it.
Nope. He was gold all along. And "Hyper Shadow" came from a typo in the strategy guide.

Pac-Man was originally named "Puck Man", but was changed when they discovered vandals could scratch off part of the P... You know what I mean, right?
In Super Mario World, the secret exit for the Donut Ghost House is set to be the normal exit, and the normal exit set to the secret exit. Use Lunar Magic if you don't believe me.

The shortened title of 9 Doors 9 Hours 9 Persons (999) happens to be the emergency phone number in the United Kingdom and several other countries.
I like 999, alright? :3

And the digital root of 999 is 9. The 9th character introduced in the game dies.

NO, YOU FOOL
YOU CREATED A TIME PARADOX
But in all seriousness, no. These games were just a few of the hundreds of games this one software company kept getting for the ZX Spectrum, so they took some of the worst and put them on one cassette. Also, ET was for Atari 2600. YOU FOOL

Super Mario Bros. 3 was actually the first video game to start many Mario game traditions. Such as, the worlds are in different themes (tundra, desert, lava-world, etc.), but in the original Super Mario Bros., the worlds were separated by different seasons.
Super Mario Bros. 2 does not take place in Mushroom Kingdom. It takes place in a dream world called Subcon.
More facts to come lator.
EDIT:
The reason Mario has a mustache and hat, is because the artist for Mario, at first, didn't know how to draw a mouth or hair.
Luigi got his name when Shigeru Miyamoto saw a restaurant named "Mario and Luigi's Pizza". XD

WHAT.
They never intended the names to be anything other than what they are. Especially sexy plumbers, I mean good god, where do you get this stuff? Maybe AnimeCreator was joking (Then again, he thought all the Sonic games are based on Sonic X), but no, never pesky plumbers.
