This is the technique to beating practically every fighting game...
...Jumping and kicking...
I works like this:
When the opponent is distracted, jump upwards in their direction. While in midair, KICK!
I beat practically every fighting game I've played this way.
Works every time...
Tell me your strategy(ies)
BlahBlahRatSheep's Strategy: Smash random buttons, get good results.
cheddargirl's Strategy: Crouch while the AI does standing combos, all the while doing crouch attacks.
GlitchSprite's Strategy: I hack. Hack and hack and hack. I love you, right-click.
Scratchthatguys's Strategy: Crouch while enemy is standing, stand while enemy is crouching, do jump attacks and jumping crouch attacks, pause the game, analyze situation, repeat. Also jump while they are doing kicks and swipe attacks. Crouch when they do jumping attacks.

XD, that same technique works for me, too.
If a crouch attack can be used in the game and if the enemy AI does most attacks standing up, then I usually just crouch, move in as close as possible, and then keep attacking the enemy with repetitive crouch attacks. Attacks given, little damage received.

Eh, I really have no preference.
Personally, though, anything that's fast is pretty good.

Hmm...something fast...can you give me an example of a game you've played so I can get an idea of your definition of "fast".

Crouch while enemy is standing, stand while enemy is crouching, do jump attacks and jumping crouch attacks, pause the game, analyze situation, repeat.

Alrighty, fine. Look up "Darkstalkers" on YouTube. It's one of my personal favorites.

Now THAT is fast. Faster than MK9 even. And that's saying something.
BTW, here's a list of the games I play.

Don't walk away slowly on the sidewalk like a normal person. I did that in Grand Theft Auto then I got 4 stars of cops following me. XD There was even helicopters.

GTA isn't a fighting game.
