Do you have Adobe Reader (a recent version) installed? I think viewing it requires that...

Hey MarkusB, if you're still having trouble with opening and reading the PDF file, there is a webpage version of a reference guide right here, which contains much of the same info as the Getting Started Guide. 
In the meantime: is this the link you have trouble viewing? http://info.scratch.mit.edu/sites/infoscratch.media.mit.edu/docs/ScratchGettingStartedv14.pdf
The PDF file has a lot of images, so it might take a while to download and view.
