Sprite Freedom

The one thing I hate about Scratch it's it's scrolling downfalls.

I think that Sprites should be able to go to X: 1000 and Y: 1000, but Scratch doesn't like that.

There are 2 solutions:

1. Always have a part of the sprite onstage- I hate this, but at least a sprite could be off-screen virtually, even with a piece of sprite still showing onscreen.

2. The ability for sprites to go off-screen. This would be a breakthrough. Finally! Off-scree sprites!

Maybe some people would say it would be too hard for new Scratchers- Maybe you could have the ability to turn it off...  big_smile

Discussify.

Re: Sprite Freedom

I agree. You can always just shift-click the sprite thumbnail to bring it back to 0,0

Ah, how this would make scrollers so much easier...

Then scrollers wouldn't be so special  tongue
...
It'd be nice if sprites could go off the screen, but it could get confusing...

I think I support the second option  big_smile

Re: Sprite Freedom

regardinbg the first option: I thought Scratch does something like that already - most sprites can go pretty far off screen without going off screen completely; maybe I'm misunderstanding something here? ^^

I do really want the second option, though. I'm kind of pretty annoyed when a sprite still lingers on the edge of the screen when I want it completely off screen.  smile

Just use the [hide] block....

I don't support.

*facepalm*

If I wanted to make a scroller with several sprite tiles, where would they go if not offscreen? It would get pretty complicated. I could figure it out, and I'm sure all of us could, but sprites should be able to go offsreen to make our lives as programmers easier.

GOT THAT!!!!!!1!1!11

EDIT: xD

DOUBLE-EDIT:

@Cheddargirl: Well, scratch limits how far our sprites can go. My first idea is to make is easier for beginners: Even if a sprite is at some really far away location, some of the sprite will be onscreen, almost as a marker, and you'll be able to click it to get the sprite to return on-screen.

Re: Sprite Freedom

I think it's more complicated for beginners when the sprites are refusing to go offscreen.
So I support, turn the offscreen protection off.

You'd need something easy to bring the sprites back though. Maybe the 'show' option in the rightclmick menu on sprite thumbnails could bring the sprite to 0,0. And it could also show a little arrow on the sprite thumbnail when it goes offscreen.

You pwn JSO, I agree with your ideas  big_smile

But there should be an option to hide the arrows.  wink

Re: Sprite Freedom

This is a great idea! One of you people should put this on scratch suggestions if you really want this happening.

Re: Sprite Freedom

I really want the second option, but I think someone said somewhere that the current system is in place to stop newer Scratchers from losing their sprites offstage and not knowing how to get them back.  hmm

Maybe a, when a sprite goes off-screen, a button appears below the sprite thumbnail that says "Return to Screen". That would be pretty easy for beginners to use...  hmm

EDIT: Would someone please put this in Scratch suggestions? I'm out of votes.

Please...?  smile
