I thought, instead of showing the time, JUST the second hand would twist to point at the button/planet the mouse is currently hovering over. The planet getting pointed at would also glow white around the edges.
I also changed "Settings" to "Options" and added "Story" for the story. I can change these if desired.
The buttons as I envisioned them:
Quickplay: Starts a random "Minigame" with random terrain and opponents.
Story: Plays the story levels.
Online: ("Multiplayer" was too long) Starts a connection process (of local or online?) players.
Options: Configure everything.
Help: Opens help window. (auto-opens on startup and can has a "Do not show on startup" checkbox.)
Credits: Credits and a "Contact Us" option somewhere.
Tell me what I need to do to it please.

So, about the quickplay I thought maybe you could select a premade map, or, like in Wc2, you could select your terrain, how many players/CPU's, and how big your map is. Then it would ranomize to your settings.

Ah yes, GIMP. That program I have but don't know how to use except for drawing because I saved up and got Photoshop Elements.

I have no idea how to implement it but I found it in a book I got for Christmas and I thought you might be interested.
Bump this.

SRR and I are working on a background for the title menu that will be a full version of my logo. The clock hands will move according to the system time and the planets (5 of them) will be menu buttons that will expand slightly as you mouse over them.
I know I'm not a graphics designer, but I had an idea, maybe you could use the arrow keys to cycle through the planets which each might have been like the QUICKPLAY, MULTIPLAYER, etc.

you got a math book for chrismas? you poor soul...
anyways, I think that algorithm is meant to create a mountainscape in a 3D space. our game is going to be 2.5D, and tile-based, so it's not really applicable.

I tried that, but got this:
doesn't look very realistic to me

Why does the mountain have canyons in it?
Exactly my point.

so for the main menu, we have:
Story (I think it should be called Campaign)
Quickplay
Online
Options (how about Settings instead?)
I don't think we really need a help button

Well, it's a story more than a campaign, and Phreak though that options sounded better than settings for some reason.

Phreak and I were talking today, and we thought that it would be a good idea to have a sub-menu inside of ONLINE so you could look at leaderboards and look for others that would want to play with you, and you'd be able to chat in the game. (obviously)

Also, for Online play, you could play over the internet with a friend, auto-match, or play local with a friend.

Can Online, multiplayer, and story be sub-menus for Quickplay?

I think it would be Online; Random map in the quickplay menu. Quickplay isn't supposed to be a "play" button.
Phreak and I are currently talking on Skype, so we think this is how it should be:
-Quickplay
----Online
----Random Map
-Leaderboards
-Options
-Credits
-Help

-Help (what would we put here? oh, controls, tutorials. duh )

alright. i made a second mockup, with more added on to it (i put in all the quickplay things). Phreak, if you could re-post the planet clock wallpaper, only with the "Realtime Strategy Game" deleted, as well as the smaller "Chrono Wars" and instead, put it in big letters across the top, then that would be perfect for the main menu background.

We're not doing the menu options on the side...

The planets THEMSELVES will be the "buttons". They will be semitransparent and have the words in them. SRR will post a rough draft I'll do tomorrow. I am still a "New Scratcher" so I can't post pictures or have a signature or anything.

Actually, I think what he has is pretty cool, but we can do whatever. I'm not on the graphics design, so I guess I'm not really one to be talking

Strange... That's not what the picture shows. I'll check the equation. Anyway, your software looks cool.
EDIT: The picture in the book looked like this:
EDIT 2: The equation that was used to generate that was this:
with "a" plotted along the y axis but k increasing only to 15.
EDIT 3: That picture didn't come out too well, and I can't replicate your diagram as Autograph doesn't support sigma in equations and the only other shortcut only works in 2D mode. I cant be bothered to write out the whole sum.
EDIT 4: I could be bothered in the end and got this:
It's completely different to the supposed result and your result. I think I'll give up.

Okay, to avoid confusion, heres a summary of the menu:
-menu options will be on the planets on the clock
-the clock's second hand will point to the selected option
-the option will glow when the hand is pointing at at
-the options are: quickplay, story, leaderboards, options, help, and credits, with their respective submenus.
