It's used to send your thread back to the top of the list, so more people can see it. Basically you are "bumping" it up, because when any post is made that thread is sent to the top.
It's commonly used on threads with little attention. However you should use it in moderation, don't bump a thread already at or near the top, or if it is active (marked by bold).
Technically, I bumped your thread.
