Well that's not very nice...
What's with the enraged tone there john?
It wasn't enraging. [/superpeppytone]

No, what I mean is they [the Scratch Team] and other users know that they cannot hear the tone of voice over the internet. However, because they cannot hear the tone of voice, they cannot know exactly what tone of voice is being used (angry, joking, threatening, etc.).so from what i gather from this thread they always assume the worst
right???More like they take things seriously rather than lightly. It's kind of hard not to take things lightly considering the age range of people visiting this website and the fact that safety is one of the foremost priorities here.
ok first off you just edited your post after i posted
second you just said you dont take things lightly then you said its hard to not take things lightly which means you do
jegus stop contradicting yourself

In all honestly, I'm not quite sure which one of my comments stuck out as rude as opposed to being respectful - as in the case with any user, you're free to report the offending comment with the reason why, and another moderator or Scratch Team member can review this.

So what I've learned from this thread is.... using a smiley to indicate tone instantly makes things better?!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Smilieys can sometimes convey tone, but they don't necessarily make things "better". For example, take a fairly threatening statement, like "I'm gonna hack you" - placing a smiley right next to it doesn't necessarily indicate to readers that the comment might be a joke.

I AM GOING TO HACK YOU
looks less threating than
I AM GOING TO HACK YOU

XD, true. When they're placed side by side, the one with the
smiley looks silly.
There are usually unique circumstances behind cases where comments might be received badly where that may have not been the original intention, so it's worth looking into each case to learn, as best as possible, what is going on before everything suddenly goes haywire between multiple parties who might have difficulty seeing eye-to-eye. ^^

Also by using [i] tags you can display emphasis and sarcasm

Or is it? It could be a snarky tone, or anything negative

Nah, I'm not snarky (although I apologize if it is coming off that way). Besides, comments reported for inappropriate behavior are treated and reviewed in the same way, regardless of whether or not they're from a moderator or a regular Scratcher.

Yeah! Tone is really tough to determine when all you have to go on is the typed word. Sarcasm is a particularly dangerous tool to try and use in written communication. So I recommend typing what you mean rather than being sarcastic and assuming that people will figure out what you meant to say. This is tough on me personally because I happen to enjoy sarcasm a lot - when I'm speaking. When I type, though, I strive to be clear.
Thanks for this interesting discussion, echs and others.
