Hello and welcome! 

Users remain new until they have done a reasonable amount of activity on the website. So the best way to become a Scratcher is to post a lot of projects and post a lot in the forums  .

The cat you see when you download Scratch is called a sprite. Sprites are characters. Hope this is helpful!

And about the cat sprite, underneath the white box, there should bean icon of the cat. Right-click and delete it if you don't want it.
