Only way i could think of is exporting each costume to your desktop or somewhere easy to find and putting them together in a program like GIMP

You could use a screen capture program to capture it as video, then save it as animated GIF. That's how you might do it in theory...I haven't tried it myself.

I would be interested to know which software packages you used to make your GIFS for your school e-portfolio. Actually, the whole e-portfolio thing sounds pretty cool too...what's that all about?

I use coffee cup's GIF animater although it is not the best, you can find better for the same price (I used it because it has a 30 day free trail).
The e-port folio is a method of showcasing our work for gcse IT. Every year dida.edexcel.org.uk releses a new 'project' which the gcse students must preform, for example, last year it was 5-a day, an organization that beliefs eating the right amour of fruit/vegitable will help you, we have to hen compile things like databases, excel documents ECT... At the end of the project we have to put all our work into a 'front page' website and ONLY hand in the website for te examiners to mark. The website has to be attractive (thus the gifs) easy to navigate, contain the right information in the right places ECT... I am going to start GCSE this coming school year (starts in 2 weeks for me) and last year we did about 3-4 hours on a archive project. The full project is said to be over 30 hours long. Ask if you want to learn more
EDIT: heres a nice free gif animator http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
