This is a game I've wanted to do for years but stuck with Scratch too long or messed things up with AS2.
This game is made with AS3 and flixel and was built with 100% free coding tools.
I will make it open source when finished
Controls: arrow keys move, space bar shoot
Shoot: Shells, cloud guy
Collect: Star bit, green mushroom
Coming back when the counter appears: At first you must press space 3 times. Each time you get hurt you must press space 3 more times to come back to life.
Game Tips: When you hit a shell it creates red stars that hit other shells. These red stars can set up chain reactions that earn BIG POINTS.
My personal highscore with this version is 1.3 million points. See if you can top it.

post highscores

12 is kind of low. If you want to come back to life you need to PRESS THE SPACEBAR AS FAST OF POSSIBLE WHEN HURT
This is the key to a good score

Also if anyone would like a flash/flixel tutorial or the source code for this game I can provide links

HIGHSCORE: 207170
Not bad, not bad...
Great game archmage!
Oh yah, the links to a flixel/flash tut would be nice.

dude i played like three times before i actually knew i was supposed to use the space bar
after that the only strategy is to mash the spacebar and move around a bunch
i guess if thats your kind of game than so be it
id give it a 2 out of 4

For people who want flixel here is the best guide on the net http://www.creativeapplications.net/fla … als-games/
The game is based of a fairly well liked minigame from Mario RPG called beetle mania
http://www.scratch.mit.edu/ext/youtube/ … re=related
There isn't any flash games out like it so I figured I would make this for people who were a fan of it from mario rpg. It was also my first time using flixel so it was a learning process too. I've wanted to do this game for so long but my AS2 version kept on breaking and Scratch is nowhere near capable enough for this.
Gameplay wise the game is done so I just need images. Also considering putting a tips box on death to remind people who don't read instructions (like tuffgoat
). My exams are done on the 17 so I will work on it at that time.
PS: for maximum score the best strategy is the one from that youtube video. You let them build up and shoot off 1 bullet at a time.

He probably shot the cloud dudes, they give 100,000 points each.
but thats not how you get big points...
Let me explain how to get massive scores like my 1.3 million. The main feature to this game is that redstars that come from shells can hit other shell and set off CHAIN REACTIONS. Every time the chain reaction is continued with the red stars the points you get is doubled (points can be seen when an enemy is destroyed). The best strategy is to let the shells build up to get massive chain reactions. See the youtube video I posted for a strategy that will work in my flash version.
In the original, you could get insane scores by exploiting these chain reactions. I have capped the score earned from chain reactions to 9999 because the scoring in the original was just madness.

What's with the scoring system?
Everything gives one, then all of a sudden, something gives 100,000
It's not well-thought out

Pretty cool, my left hand is now dead from hitting space so many times.
My highscore 227,394.

Only the cloud guy can give 100,000 points. I don't see whats wrong with that.
The cloud guy has a few functions actually...
1. He gives 100,000 points
2. He clears all the shells on stage
3. He resets the shell drop rate
4. It takes longer for the next cloud guy to spawn
The cloud guy is meant to be an easy way for beginners to get points (I personally don't shoot them) as well as a way of prolonging the game.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are only getting "1"s then YOU ARE NOT PLAYING CORRECTLY. What you want is for the red stars that come off shells to hit other shells. Shooting shells alone gives almost no points. Please refer to this video on how to play like a pro http://www.scratch.mit.edu/ext/youtube/ … re=related
The most comparable version to this is this java game. If you want to compare games this is the one you should compare it to.
http://javaunlimited.net/beetlemania/
Things to do:
-Main coding is done, need to make cloud guy faster, harder to hit, may adjust shell speed
-Make a menu screen
-New graphics for a variety of things
-Instructions page
-Tips on death
-(maybe) upload to highscores board
Please note that this game is based off a SNES minigame which already isn't the best, but is remember by a few people who liked mario RPG. I am not trying to make a blockbuster, just trying to make an open source game and hone my flixel skills.

I made a video on how to get highscores. This video shows my second attempt with the first attempt earning 300000 points.
http://www.scratch.mit.edu/ext/youtube/?v=3Tbx4gz-en8
The blue point numbers mean you have shot a cloud guy and will give 100000 points. The red point number mean that you have maxed out a chain reaction and will give 9999 points.
