Ratings

It would be nice if people could rate people's projects 1-5 stars. Or people's comments a +1 or -1 like youtube does(or thumbs up or thumbs down like yahoo.com does)
UPDATE:
You should have the ability to disable ratings for your game if you are new or don't want your game rated.

Re: Ratings

The problem with this is that new users would become discouraged if they get 1 stars on their projects and Scratch is supposed to be a "happy" place.

On the other hand: If someone gets a low rating and quits because they have no perseverance- then that person is not fit to program. But if they keep going even though they are receiving 1 stars, they get better and better because they persevere- which is one of the qualities a programmer needs to have. Stars give flexibility and the ability to rate projects better.

Re: Ratings

I agree with zeld. I personally think that it would help me if people could rate the my games as it would give me some quality input instead of just a love it senario.

You mean QFT. Quoted For Truth, not Quoted Truth For.

Yes, I agree this would be a good idea. Maybe when you upload, there would be a check box saying "Allow ratings". And you could change it at any time.

You could ask your viewers to rate your games in your project notes if you want people to rate your games.

Re: Ratings

i dont think many people on scratch would give a project a low star rating, i think most people would not be as harsh but may just not give a rating at all so as not to offend.  I do however think that a rating feature is not needed and could lead to other issues.  the love it system is great as it offers positive responses but no negatives.

BUT when people look at a project they like it not love it. They would give it 4 stars not 5 but it is still good.
1 star= needs work
2= ok
3= almost there
4= very good
5= awesome
U can disable ratings for a project u don't want rated.
If a comment gets 5 thumbs down it is automatically removed.

this is actually a problem, not having any ratings might give someone the impresion no one is looking at there projects however, a low rating for a person who is prepered to keep trying means he/she needs to update it to make it better which would be the whole point of the rating system to start off with!

Re: Ratings

I don't know why Scratch hasn't added this yet. And also, don't have a top rated section when sorting projects. People will always try to lower the ratings on those projects, thus ruining the system.

Re: Ratings

That's a good idea. I think that it would help people getting an idea of how your project's are. As long as people don't abuse the ratings or stars...or whatever it is. It would be an excellent idea to gauge how good people think your projects are.

Re: Ratings

We have had requests for a rating system in the past.

A rating system for Scratch projects is something that might be very difficult to get quite right for a few reasons.  It is hard to get everyone to think about projects in the same way and on the same scale.  An advanced user might be more critical of projects than a newer user - which might lead to someone getting their feelings hurt.

In some places where ratings are used (television shows, the stock market, etc) there is a very specific rubric that is used to calculate a "score."  This is much harder to do with people making different types of projects, for different purposes, and at different levels.

Also, we want to avoid having people create projects only for the purpose of receiving a high score...if they stop receiving high scores, will they be inclined to stop creating projects?

One way we encourage everyone to give feedback is by using the comment feature.  That way, rather than getting just a score, you can get feedback, advice on changes to make, questions that might highlight or inspire you to change something, etc.  Through comments, we hope to offer everyone who share's their project the opportunity to receive constructive feedback to help them become better Scratchers.
