you need to have a platform on it otherwise it won't work

What type of adventure game were you thinking of? A platformer? Something like Pokemon? You'll have to be more specific, I'm afraid, otherwise we won't be able to help you.  smile

If you want to know how to make a scrolling game, archmage once made a scrolling engine that you could try to use for your game.
