Re: ITopic: New Members...introduce yourself here!

Guten Tag,
I'm an old fart with his memories ( but thankfully) no Pall Malls sitting here in the light of the screen while civil twilight is beginning to at last give me enough light to help me find my coffee mug.  The cat is on the chair beside me - my grandson's cat.

My wife finds me excessive: in this particular instance: too many hours programming Scratch to the exclusion of real life.  I wasn't looking for scratch & now I can't remember how I came across it.

I was looking for a kernel to promote cross generational & autodidactic learning/growth.  What came to mind - beside self recognition - was the junior high kids in Eugene Oregon back in the early/mid 70's knowing more than their teachers & pushing them aside. I was a sub; the kids were hacking assembler and doing novel things with the early versions of video games.

So I was at the used computer store looking for a PET to take to my friend's junior hi school when I came across Scratch.  It will do what I want to do & do it in ways modern, relational, and more powerful than going back to Push & Pop.

I love to program but object language is foreign still - that is if this is object language.  I will be programming.  I will explore the gamut; so far I have one program up, built around the example project examples>Interactive Art> 03 PlayWithYourFace.

Re: ITopic: New Members...introduce yourself here!

How do I create a normally distributed (or just a skewed distribution) of random numbers - say, numbers from -5 to +5 with the extremes much less likely.

Re: ITopic: New Members...introduce yourself here!

Here (my project -> "random skewed distribution graphs in progress"  http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/SeanSL/1450678 ) is what I am chewing on; & as far as I have gone in the development of a discrete approximation of a normal distribution.

It isn't the goal though: I want something clean & compact - as close as I can get to the one statement script you sent.

Re: ITopic: New Members...introduce yourself here!

Hi, I am a new member interested in all of the Geometry-type animations...
I just played with the "Interesting Pencil" Scratch video--it was awesome, especially the "double" slider that produces symmetry patterns on the screen...

I looked at the Scratch wiki, hoping to find a Geometry category, but didn't find one...
I looked under Animations, but that is not what i was looking for...
Is there a search tool or category of Scratch videos that deal with geometric patterns
(also liked the seashell drawing pattern video...

thanks for this cool website ...

Hey kasha8888,

Welcome to Scratch! Sorry for the rather delayed response! I haven't been very active on the website recently and apparently nobody else was able to provide an answer.

Perhaps you'd be interested in taking a look at this gallery? There are plenty of great string art-related projects that would be a great tool or basis to help you out. Maybe that's too specific a niche, but I for one find this area of projects to be absolutely fascinating.

Hope that helps!

Oh, and welcome also to Max4344, Zux, parker0131, and Icechick59!

Hello Sean!
It's refreshing to see an older member here! It's unusual, as mostly it's kids and teens like me that join Scratch. I hope you're enjoying the site!
I'll see if I can help...
So basically, you want it so that getting, say, -5 is less likely than -1, or 0, for example?
This is quite a complicated thing... I believe you would need a separate variable for each possibility. Then you would have to almost set the probability of getting each possibility.

This is really complicated. It's a little hard to explain, so maybe someone will add to my point. I hope I understand you right.  smile  Scratch on!

Re: ITopic: New Members...introduce yourself here!

Hi, I'm new to the site, but I've been scratching for a while now. I'm a serious Godzilla fan. I'm also pretty random. If this sounds a bit formal, it's because I'm sort of a social outcast. I hope you people enjoy my projects!
