Sorting what projects show up? I think AddZero/Jtxt has a big suggestion about that if I were remember correctly... I also think illusionist made a project mockup about it.  smile

Re: Take the "What the Community is Remixing" section off the front page.

The Top Remixed section was supposed to give good projects for remixing - but all it gives are remix chains like "Add your character to the hill" and coloring contests. It was meant for highly remixable projects. Of course, it'd be fine if the remix chains were things such as "Add a level to this platformer" - that's a good remix chain - but that's not what gets Top Remixed.

Of course, the Scratch Team won't get rid of Top Remixed because it gives a good impression of remixing... but if we suggest it on Scratch Suggestions and it gets 200 votes, they might do something... or veto it.

Great points! I definitely agree that Top Remixed is not what it could be, and would totally support the idea if any useful sorts of projects that taught programming skills showed up, but frankly, such projects are a rarity.

On a completely separate note, Miscellaneous hasn't been posted in for more or less one hour.

Try putting your suggestion on Scratch Suggestions - that'll be the only way to have the suggestion approved - mass agreement.

I support. You might as well put a "Most useless projects" column and nothing would change.

Re: Take the "What the Community is Remixing" section off the front page.

Yes, YES! Great! It's a waste of space, too, so we could extend, possibly, the other sections, such as newest projects, to instead of showing 3 projects in that section, 5 instead, because (I've tested this) there is a 1 in 3 chance of your project popping up in newest projects, therefore, it would be easier, and more people could get noticed, etc.  big_smile

I might return for a little while.

Instead of removing the row, why not encourage users to make more "add an animation to the wack animation" or "add a level to the karate game", and less "add yourself at the underwear store" or "someone backflips while I play unfitting music".

Yeah, make it more programming instead of coloring.

lol...I completely agree. Honestly, my eyes just glaze over the Top Remixed section and I forgot it existed until I saw this topic.

This idea gets three thumbs up from me.

I think you're misunderstanding andresmh - he didn't agree with removing the remixing channel.  neutral

Taken from the suggestions page:

andresmh wrote:

some people have told me that they got started/interested in Scratch by adding something to a remix chain, so it might serve some role in getting beginners engaged with Scratch. Also, how is it "useless" if so many people use it? Finally, have any of you tried to create "remixes projects with actual programming value" or that "inspire", if not, why not?

coolstuff wrote:

I do think that Top Remixed has some potential; I just think it's being used in the wrong way. I wasn't aware that some people got started with Scratch via remix chains, and that definitely changes my opinion somewhat. But I still think that Scratch should be a programming tool, not a socialization tool.
I have, in fact, created a base to a project with quite a few remixes, but it didn't make top remixed simply because I didn't suggest so. I don't generally remix projects - and I wish I did - but that is mostly because I rarely use that section of the front page because I find many of the project there to be quite simply useless.

andresmh wrote:

so you're saying that you don't use that section of the website because people use it in the wrong way. I guess the question is, how can we encourage people like you to use in the way you think it is right.

To quote an older post holding the same position (taken from here:

andresmh wrote:

I am against this idea because I think this section of the front page serves three purposes:

1. Promotes the idea of remixing right on the front page. Important from new members.

2. Gives reputation to those who create highly remixable projects.

3. Opens new opportunities for project creation. It is very easy to see that Scratch can be used to create video games and animations but the idea of building collaborative projects that engage many people didn't really take off until the Top Remixed section was added. The fact that hundreds, if not thousands, of people have participated in this kind of remixing makes me think that it is a type of project creation that was enabled by this Top Remixing.

I do agree that most of the top remixed projects are not the most complex ones and it seems like all of you want to see more complex projects, so what about taking this as a challenge!?

The challenge is to create a highly remixable project that helps people see new ways of using chain remixing. For example, a while ago I remember someone creating a project that had a little robot and that invited people to remix and add their own robot so the two robots would compete against each other in trying to get to a section of the screen while preventing the other robot to do so. Basically the idea was to create some kind of AI competition.  I am not saying to recreate this exact idea but I am sure you can come up with something together that ups the complexity level of remixing. Seems like there are already 17 of you who might be interested in doing this. I think if you organize yourself and get to remix a project like the one I describe you can actually start a new movement of really cool and complex top remixed projects.

Rather than trying to get X type of project from the front page, I think a better approach is to organize yourselves and show that a different type of projects are possible and get those to the front page. It is not about removing, it's about adding diversity.

That very last sentence I underlined is the most important take-home-message here regarding the remixing channel.

Re: Take the "What the Community is Remixing" section off the front page.

Great idea! When a whole class of kids all have to remix the teacher's project for homework, you end up with a Scratch Cat saying something while spinning on the front page because it has 30 remixes within one night. It's an easy way for an untalented programmer to get 'fame'. So yeah, I support.
