Hey, it's getting kind of bumpy in here..
Choosing "raters" would be interesting, but would take a lot of energy and time. But perhaps it would be easier to just to use past curators?
For example, we could create a new row called "What the curators are loving..." And show projects recently loved by those who have been curators in the past. Would this achieve similar ends to your original idea?
What do you think?

Brilliant. But I said that there would be people with an appointed project type... Maybe I need to restate what I want with some mockups.
I hate making mockups, but when it's over, they usually look awesome. xD

I have an idea!
So, there are buttons on some info page about this feature.
"Become an Game rater"
"Become an Art rater"
Etc.
When you click this, the ST reviews your account. (Helpful member, experience with the selected genre, etc.) If they want you, they set you as one and you can rate any "your genre here" projects. When you do, it averages your score into the "popularity.
The average would determine the most popular ones, and the first three would show under their genre.
But there would only be one bar on the frontpage which would be "Popular projects in ------" The ------ would be a dropdown with the different genres.
Understand?

This isn't done because the Scratch team doesn't want people to get discouraged. I like this idea, but it's just never going to happen, because think how somebody would feel if they got their first front page and it got bashed at 1-2 stars?

ARG.
They would if the raters thought it deserved 1 or 2 stars. The point is that they'll have to write over 500 words on WHY they gave it that rating, so they will (hopefully, although probably not) be mature enough to take it as advice. And the only things that should be getting 1 or 2 stars would be like a rickroll or something.
AND DON"T TL;DR ME.
