Do you really know what thanksgiving is about?

And what happened after it? Who first celebrated it? (Don't google, just tell me what you know.)

Re: Do you really know what thanksgiving is about?

Well, I was watching a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Special the other day
And according to that, the pilgrims first celebrated thanksgiving because they were happy that they found land or something, then they ate a bunch of food while Schroeder played the piano

Re: Do you really know what thanksgiving is about?

It was first celebrated by the Mayflower pilgrims at Plymouth, when they had their first successful harvest. Thats America's version.

Re: Do you really know what thanksgiving is about?

Yes, like militarydudes said, it was the Pilgrims and Native Americans of the area celebrating either the fact that they had a good harvest or the fact that they had survived however long they were there before Thanksgiving.

Re: Do you really know what thanksgiving is about?

It's about the celebration of how the pilgrims fought off the turkey and pie onslaught that plagued the world. It was in fact, on that day, that people realized pie and turkey were edible, so they ate lots of turkey and pie that day too.

I'm graduating HS this April and going to college in the Fall.

Re: Do you really know what thanksgiving is about?

Ah. Well, I could make a whole history chapter about it, but I'll try to put in short.

Some English people, were hiding from their country in Netherlands, because of their king. But it was hard for them to get jobs in Netherlands. So, William Bradford, the leader of the English people who separated from England (called Separatists) decided to make their own territory at the "New World" (North America).
So, the Separatists made a ship called the Mayflower and sailed to America. Some Spanish settlers who already lived in America said that it was alright if the English people decided to live in their territory. But the Separatists wanted a shorter route and so they arrived at Cape Cod in Massachusetts (did I spell that correctly?  tongue ).
However, the English people weren't used to life in America, and they had a hard time during the winter. But a Native American of the "Wampanoag" tribe, Squanto, befriended the English people and introduced them to new plants such as corn. Squanto could speak English as well, so that made it easier for him to communicate with the English people. He taught the English people, as a matter of fact, how to use fish as a fertilizer for food!
And finally, sometime between September and November, the Wampanoag tribe and the English people had a large feast with all the food they planted and fished for called "Thanksgiving". It lasted for three days, and it was nice because the Wampanoag tribe and the English people actually got together in peace.

And that's the origin on Thanksgiving.  big_smile
