This.
So when I'm hand-writing an essay or writing a test, I use a pencil, but when I'm taking notes, I use pen.

Well, you can shade with pencils, but for cartoon and charicature drawing I use a 0.4mm pen. I don't erase a lot, so really, using pen doesn't affect my life greatly.
EDIT: That was a seriously bad typo.

It depends. On books, pencil. On papers, pen.

Pencil
1. Erasable
2. Required in some classes
3. I have a mechanical pencil. When I run out of lead, I just refill.
yeah, I have a ton of mechanicals. My class has a pen collector though, and he claims that he doesn't own a pencil
@chrischb: yeah, one time we were making maps of africa and he had to redo his 3 times because of tiny mistakes.

Mechanical pencils or pens.

I REALLY don't like using pens.
Here's my reasoning:
1. I can only use pens in some of my classes,
2. If I need to print something in ink, I type it!
3. I like the faded look of not too sharp, but not too dull pencils.

Mechanical Pencils!!!
That's all I use at school. It's too annoying to have to sharpen them.
I'll use pen for some things, but usually pencil. I use pencil more at school and use pen more at home.

Usually, I prefer to use mechanical pencils. As long as they're not the kind where the lead breaks immediately after it touches the paper
The funny thing I've noticed is that basically the only class which requires the use of a specific writing implement is Maths.. and that's not even consistent country to country! here in New Zealand I've gotten into trouble for writing in pencil, while in the US I was disciplined for using pen!

I use pencils on rough drafts of my writing, then I use pen for my better copy, then I finally use my treasured feather pen to write my good copy or I just type it. I love writing

Yes! This definitely happens to me all the time
I, however, have a strong distaste for pens, and I can only write neatly/smoothly with a pencil. It is also nearly impossible to do math with a pen, and that, being what I spend the most time doing, is an important thing to consider.
So I'm going to have to choose pencil for this debate

Pencil and eraser. I'm horrible at spelling.

I often use a pencil so sketch out gesture then go over with pen on top
But most of the time, I freehand with a pen. It's just naturally dark and I can make confident lines with it, so nothing shakes.

I think the term is quill
I've used one before, and they are difficult
