Re: can't remember password

Well yes becuase Scratch asks no security questions to prove you were Christaphoam, and even to delete the user, you will need a password to prove it is you, they could to something with your IP but then if you have that at school and this at home, that doesn't work either, I think that you will end up just abondoning the account

Re: can't remember password

Maybe the scratch team should implement a security question.

Re: can't remember password

Or at least ask security questions like
e.g.
a) What are the last 5 digits of your phone number
b) What is your mothers maiden name
c) What is your favourite subject in school
d) what is you mu/dad's middle name
etc.

Re: can't remember password

Well your password is kind of like a security question, isn't it?

Re: can't remember password

I mean a personal question, that you have to define when you sign up.

Like:

Question "What's your mothers birth day? (mm/dd/yyyy)"
Answer: "01/01/1969"

When you enter your username, click "Forgot password?" the question (and an answer text field) shows up.

Yes, a second chance, that is what most websites have now

Re: can't remember password

Security questions are not intended to display your password, but rather to prove that the right person is initiating a request for assistance with their password. With or without a security question, the most common method of dealing with lost passwords is to email the password to the original account used to create the login for that site (a very bad idea), or email a link to that original email account which can be used to create a new password (a much better idea). Site admins can't go by IP address to prove you need a certain account's password; you could be sitting at your friend's computer making that request! Heh heh.

Andres is right: your password *is* the security question. The question is "what is your password?" And the answer, which only you should know, is the password you chose. Watch out for the caps-lock key! Many users forget that they have it on (or off) when typing their password.

Re: can't remember password

Passwords are a reasonable security mechanism for adults, but not so good for kids who are infrequent users of the site.  I have had several kids in Tech Club create accounts and then forget the password before they logged in again.  I have so many accounts on so many different sites that I have to keep a file with all my passwords in it, in order to keep track.  This, obviously, makes for a rather big security hole, but I have a lot of accounts that I only use once a year or less, so remembering which password and account name I have on each site is difficult.  (Sites that put restrictions on passwords, so that I have to create a unique password for that site, make the problem even worse.  The most annoying sites are ones that make me change my password every couple of months.  There is no real security advantage to doing that, and it makes it impossible for me to remember what my current password is for the site.)

The scratch team should probably delete any account that has no project or gallery and hasn't been logged into for 3 months—it is probably an abandoned account.

The scratch site can't send e-mail to the owner of an account to create new passwords, at least not always, because many of the accounts have no e-mail associated with them.

If you delete the account after 3 months what if someone can't go on for 3 months?

Folks, please keep your forum posts related to the thread topic being discussed!  It's like interupting a conversation when you jump in with something random...very rude.  Thank you.

But I always do that! Lol, and I remember that this happened a while back- no one could get into their accounts. It's resolved now, but its on topic too
