ok i find that alot of scratch users do certain things to get "messages". They create a little race in their mind to come up with these "messages" they make you feel special
however, these messages could be causing problems
on all of the publicity stunts that many users hate are for "messages"
some users even boast about how many messages they have to make other users feel sad. (i forget who but i have seen this, anyway it is rude to mention names) so, these "messages" is or could be a future problem in the community of scratch
this also creates off-topic posts about how much "messages" a user has
MY SOLUTION::have all of the messages delete after a certain amount of days that users could set from 1-10,varying because of how little some users get on scratch
WHY I THINK THIS IS A GREAT IDEA:: It will probably stop these publicity stunts, scratch is for having fun programming and making friends. NOT for people to become POPULAR

i think i have pretty good solutions

Would the automatic delete be limited to messages that have already been read? I don't think I would like a feature that deleted messages before I had a chance to read them, if I happend to be gone for a few days!
If that one potential problem can be addressed (by only deleting messages that have been read), your suggestion sounds like a good idea to me.

thank-you nice idea on adding to my suggestion
i agree with your added suggestion, gone for more then 10 days???because most people take vacations for like 5-7 days......?

I think you are proposing a solution where there is no problem. deleting messages automatically so people can't tell you how many messages they have seems a little extreme. I don't believe anybody brags about how many messages they have to make others feel bad. I think they do it to make themselves feel good.
The scratch team can't try to prevent every little thing that annoys people. The site would be way to restrictive.

I do think that paddle2see is right. That is one of the things that I want to see. Also on forum posts it would be nice instead it still saying unread after you have read it.

Most publicity stunts are for attention. People know that they cant boast about how many messages they have from 1 publicity stunt, because most people will still have more messages. I really see nothing wrong with Keeping Messages. It is a good way of tracking your comments and amount of friend adds, and also allows you to look over which projects more more popular, etc.

Why would you care how many messages you have? Do you? Also Im pretty sure the people who want attention aren't going to "my messages" but straight to thier project.

I suspect that there are many people who only use Scratch on an infrequent basis. I often get responses to my comments weeks, even months after I left the comment. Not everybody is a Scratch addict!
I also tend to agree with The_Guardian that this may not be a problem worth trying to solve. If people don't have messages to boast about, they will find some other metric to compare and boast about (like total number of comments). I'm afraid it's simply human nature...although I do think it is a bit rude as it makes other people feel bad about their numbers.
