Re: Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

The only website that comes to mind where you have to accept friends is YouTube, but other than that, you can subscribe to them. I never really saw a use for the friends list besides keeping track of all the people who's projects you like, or who you talk to a lot

BTW: Does DA use asynchronous friend system like Scratch does, where you can friend someone regardless of whether or not they friend you? Sometimes I think we should just go with what seems like the standard these days - where both people must confirm in order to be friends.

When I started using dA, I noticed that dA's friend/watch system is asynchronous like Scratch's system. However, there is a way to actually remove yourself from someone's friend list in dA. I'm not sure of the lack of an asynchronous system is due to the fact dA wants to keep the friend system the same, or if it would be too difficult of an overhaul on dA's part.  hmm

My question is: How would having a "watched" list and a "friend" list change the meaning of friends on Scratch?  Would it be more meaningful to be friends with someone knowing that you could have just "watched" them to see their new projects?

In my opinion, it would change the meaning of "friends" on Scratch. I believe it would be more meaningful to Scratchers of they were considered a friend as opposed to being just watched.

One thing I've noticed (and what caused me to suggest a friend/watch idea in the first place) is that sometimes Scratchers would get peeved if they have been added as a friend by someone they didn't know or have spent little to no time talking to (questioning why they were added as a friend of they do not know even know the person), so I think it would be great if there was a way to distinguish who we follow and who we consider as a friend.

@cheddargirl nice mock-up.

"Who I watch" seems a little creepy but the concept is great.

@what-the Haha...I was laughing when I saw your post...extremely true. It got worse when I started thinking of naming both lists:

1. Who I watch
2. Who watches me

The second one sounds creepier than the first! So what should both lists be called? My first thought was:

1. My fan list
2. My fans

But that would be too confusing. My second thought was:

1. Users I follow
2. Users who follow me

Which is more clear, but doesn't use the word "fan". Ideas?

It sound similar to Twitter, and that worked great.

How about Users I Like, as opposed to Fans?  smile

Re: Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

Friends and fans have been added to the Clutter website, with designs that were inspired by this thread. To become a friend, you need to send a request, which the other person must accept for you both to become friends. You can become a fan of any user, and their newest projects will appear on your homepage. You can see your friends, the people you are a fan of, and the users who are fans of your Clutters on your My Stuff page.

Thanks to cheddargirl for inspiring this idea. We'll test it out, and see how well it works.

Hey paulmedwal - just wondering: if, after testing the system on the Clutter website, will there there plans to implement the idea over to the main Scratch site?

Re: Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

perhaps, to avoid insulting anyone, both friends and watchers would be put under a new category- users

on your own page, there will be friends & watchers, but someone else viewing your page will see them combined as "[user]'s users."  each person will only be there once, otherwise it is known that some are only friended or wached

Re: Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

what would be cool is to able to subscribe to users, like youtube.
because personally i sometimes add people because i like to keep a track of when they upload a new project on the "Your friend's latest projects....." section.

im not good at explaining stuff but you know what i mean

Re: Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

This is really a good point to bring up. I think the friends system should be more of an agreement between the two Scatchers (where one gets a message when one requests his/her own friendship).
Keep up the good work, Scratch team, and good luck on Scratch 2.0! I can't wait!
