Comment On Userpages

For some reason, I got this idea while listening to "Shut Me Up" by Mindless Self Indulgence.  tongue

So, a lot of people leave comments on projects, saying something that the user might find interesting, but doesn't have anything to do with the project. Like "Did you hear that Green Day's on tour?", "Justin Bieber finally got sued!", etc.

That's all stuff I'd really like to know, but on my projects I'd rather have comments to do something with the project. Like "I love this project!", "Awesome music you used!", "The art could be better", etc.

Well, I've come up with a solution! Instead of leaving the first kind of comments mentioned on a users project, you could leave them on a users page.

So here there would be a comment box at the bottom. Maybe, if user pages become too crowded, the could be a "show comments/hide comments" button.

So, what do you think?

Please explain. Hurumph. I hate the 60 second rule. If we MUST have a rule can we make it reasonable?

Well, it could help spam on projects.

Re: Comment On Userpages

What would you use comments on user pages for? Chatting? That isn't really allowed on Scratch - if you want to chat with other Scratchers, use Twitter or something.

Re: Comment On Userpages

I half like it - it would be handy when discussing stuff not strictly related to a project of a user's, but still related... such as "when are you making another project?", "can you do an art request for me?", and "I love your projects, keep up the good work!".

At the same time... chat.  tongue

Sounds a bit too much like Facebook or something for my liking. Sorry.

Re: Comment On Userpages

Yeah, a lot of the time I have something to say that doesn't fit in a project...
"The answer to your signature is 42"
"Would you like to join the pumpkin hordes"
"Can I use your music"
etc.

Re: Comment On Userpages

The idea in itself is definitely a very good one. i often get comments (especially relating to bingo) about when i'll release the next version of this, do an update of that, how they like my initiative on some scratch mod or something... but these always end up in the wrong place -- my latest project.

The problem with this idea is obviously the amount of chat-like comments it will create. this includes "please reply when you're online" and other silly comments which we could avoid.

The key is to find a balance between the two options. We dont want the extra spam, but want to group up comments related to the user's activities rather than a specific project. maybe have a subpage of the user page, maybe follow this thread's original idea.. we'll see if the Scratch Team decides whether to do anything about it!  smile

Re: Comment On Userpages

I think i support so long as the same system that is used on project pages is used. It would be nice  smile  I have random things to say like "Good job getting curator!" and stuff that doesn't pertain to projects.

Yep - great post. There could be advantages, but one disadvantage would be that people might sign up on Scratch just to chat, and chat they would...

The choice to keep comments on projects was made during the initial design to try to emphasize and encourage exactly what you want, sanddude: comments on projects that are helpful and constructive. When you want to comment to someone, you end up viewing (at least one) of their projects.

Of course, our method isn't perfect, but I hope our thinking about this is a bit more clear to everyone now. Believe me - encouraging constructive, relevant, and helpful comments is something we'd love to improve on, so if you have any ideas on how to go about it, by all means let us know.  smile

Re: Comment On Userpages

By friends, you mean only Scratch friends? If this was in real life, you could just talk to them in... real life. On Scratch, if they have no projects, but you consider yourselves friends, then you should have their comments on your projects to reply to. If you're just forum friends, talk to them in their topic, but don't spam, and contribute something before going off-topic.
And if you've never done any of those things, are they really friends?
