OK, in school, they often make us read old books we probably wouldn't choose to read on our own. However, sometimes, they are actually really good. What are some of your favorite books (or plays) that you've been forced to read as an assignment?
My favorites:
The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
The Chosen by Chaim Potok
The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
The Crucible by Arthur Miller
EDIT: Extra question: what books have you read on your own that you think should be taught in school? I think The Book Thief by Markus Zusak should be a requirement.

I haven't had to read much yet, since I'm only in sixth grade
But I liked The Giver by Lois Lowry. We had to read that this year
Uhh.. I had to read Ramona The Pest by Beverly Cleary in second grade
I really liked that too
But I probably would have read those books on my own eventually if we hadn't been assigned to

To Kill A Mockingbird is my absolute favorite
I think Eragon or Pendragon should be taught in schools. We are reading the Cruible right now... not my favorite at all

I've never read a good book in school. They all sucked. I don't feel like listing them, but there are at least 15.

Um, that It's Bud, Not Buddy was good I guess. I hate almost all books they make you read. Actually, I hate a lot of books even though I'm one of the best readers in the school. One I loved though I wasn't forced to read was......
Oh my god what a book.

Apparently the ending was emotional, am I heartless?

Oh yeah, other good books we had to read were 1984, Animal Farm, Night, and The Princess Bride.
Unlike the guy above me I liked The Crucible (even though it was summer reading for us, along with Huck Finn, The Great Gatsby, and some other book I forget...still haven't read the last two yet)

Thats one of my favorite books ever
I have the first paragraph memorized, because that used to be the only book I ever read. I ended up rereading it like fifty times. Heh
Uhhh.. What else...
The Whipping Boy. Good book...
Mr Popper's Penguins. I loved that book
And thats all I remember. But yeah, we didn't have to read many books in elementary school, just some ten-paged cheesy books that were made to be discussed with classes :( (So yeah they were boring)

Freak the Mighty was kind of stupid but the ending was pretty sad.
Spoiler: Kevin gets a seizure and dies.

Oh, like this one that was about a guy who meets a witch who's scared of witches. It was interesting up until she met the guy. THen it was:
They flew on her broom.
They saw the moon.
"Wow!" she said.
"Wow!" he said.
The moon was big.
"Wow!" they both said.

We haven't really read one good book at all in middle school so far. The only one remotely good that we read was Tom Sawyer.
