I agree with you on this! It can be very hard to find projects of a certain type. But how would the projects get sorted into these categories? Who is going to do all that sorting, assuming we had some group of galleries or something to hold them?

That's one thing I hate about Scratch. You either find a project that's new or popular. The only way to find one that isn't is by doing suprise projects, and that can be hard to find a good project in. It really needs a better way to browse projects.

Easy!
You just have the preset catagories that you get when you download the cliant;
(Ooh deyjavu again *unrelated*)
Animation
Games
Greetings
Interactive art
Music and dance
Names
Simulations
Speak up
Storeis
Then when you upload your project you decide what catagorie it bellongs to.
E.g. "Can you dance" would go in the catagorie "Music and Dance"
Then, if the user whants, they can place it in a subcattagorie (Or Genre sounds better) of its own.
E.g. the creator of WoddunesWorld might write, "TalkShow/Comedy"
Naturaly you rgoing to have to trust your clients to put there projects in the right catagorie but their more likely to want to put their project in a suitible cattagorie.
You could add Miccilanias or none to the list for peaple who don't whant to be bothered by the catagorie system
Their I've just done the hard bit for you ;)

Yes. But think, if you tag your project "movie", many different projects will come up. But if you tag it "movie" subcategory "comedy", than it will sort all the projects out. That's basically it: Sorting out the tags

One thing you can do to help categorize projects to make them easier to find is add tags to yours and other people's projects.
These could be things like:
game,
story,
animation,
racer,
scroller,
humor,
tutorial,
language,
music,
comic,
postcard,
how-to,
3-D,
tribute,
series,
anime,
or anything else that helps to describe or classify a project!

I have a very long post solely about this topic. It goes into detail about how and why this should be a new feature. You can find it here: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=7763
