In video games, bats suck.
Really. Don't believe me? Here's proof:
Castlevania: (All of them)
Well, Dracula aside, (he isn't exactly a bat anyway) they are not too bad in the first game. Bit hard to hit, but yeah, not as bad as the Medusa heads. However, in Bloodlines, they kinda ARE the Medusa heads, so they suck there.
Mario: (Super Mario World)
In the underground levels, you are likely going to come across these. They are really small, really hard to hit, and are unpredictable. They suck there.
Sonic: (SA2 and sadly almost every game after)
Rouge. Rouge just sucks.
EDIT: I felt kinda uneasy about this one, because I didn't give a reason. Well here is one. Three. Whatever.
1. She really has no point. OH BUT SHEEZ KNUX GF-I don't care. He didn't need one.
2. Her design. I always envisioned Sega pulling one of those clothes designers that design women's clothing nobody even wears off the street and saying "Heres a pencil and some paper, make us a bat."
3. She doesn't really belong with the rest of the characters. This is really apparent to me whenever I'm just cycling through TV channels and Sonic X comes up. (PS: I still hate that show.)
Ninja Gaiden:
They're the birds. We all hate the birds, so they suck there.
Megaman: (2, 4)
In Megaman 2 (Wood Man's Stage) they aren't really awful. not too many hits to kill, kinda slow. In Megman 4, (Skull Man) They take WAAAAY too many hits to take down, and are kinda faster. Add pits and you'll die a lot. They suck.
Legend Of Zelda: (At least all of the top-down ones and Zelda II)
Call them Keese or whatever, they are still bats. They're small, they fly around, and also, there are far too many is the dungeons! They suck here.
There's your proof. Is there any game where bats don't suck?

In Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, the bats are totally noob.
Here's what happens:
*Player switches on game*
Player:Lol random intro scene
Player:Let's walk!
Player:OMG ZOMBIES!
*5 seconds later*
Player:Made it through!
Player:OMG Bats!
*lvl 1 player leaps and slashes them with beginning weapon. bats die*
Player:Lol, bats fly in a straight line?
Error:Signature could not load. Please wait for an indefinite amount of time, until you realize you're gullible and go off to look for another potentially interesting signature to stare at.

I've also seen them in Mega Man X(1)(Armored Amadillo's Stage) and they're annoying there too! And, it's not just Mario World, it's just about every game that came after SMB3!

Why is it so difficult to tell what species they are? At first I had no bloody clue what Sonic was, and I had never even heard of an echidna, so like what the heck?

For some reason, everytime I think of bats, I think of those bats in WarioLand III that turn Wario into some vampire thing. Not too bad in that game, Wario's vampire form is pretty nifty at times (not as nifty as Batman, of course, but still nifty).
EDIT: I looked it up, those bats are called miniculas. ^^

I hate bats in scribblenauts. They swarm you and do damage when you are attacking medusas and wizards and stuff.
