English Fail

My schools having a "Speak Good English" program, because my country has a dialect called Singlish(Singapore English), and they're trying to discourage it. I don't really blame them... people say things like "How much you sell?" which is weird. Anyway, on one of the posters this was put up.

A man was trying to get a job. Here is his job application:"I saw yr ad in the ST Class. I wuld like to aply as secr. My eng v gd."

Note:This is a true story, it was put up in the ST(Straits Times). The guy didn't get the job... XD

Re: English Fail

It's weird. You have to live in Singapore to "get it".

"How much you sell?" (How much does this cost?)
"Off the light."(Switch off the light.)
"Lend $5 can?"(May I borrow $5?)
"Walao, your home so nice lor!" (Your house is very nice!)
"That kiasu gong-gong go die already is real ah?" "You ask me I ask who?" (Is that crazy old man who has a phobia of losing really dead? I don't know either.)

Re: English Fail

Some countries have some form of dialect where they mix two languages together. In the Philippines, there's something known as Taglish, which is a mix of Tagalog and English. There's also Chavacano/Chabacano which mixes Spanish with some Philippines dialects.

Re: English Fail

Rdococ, you should look at this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language#History
"As a result of the growth of the British Empire, English was adopted in North America, India, Africa, Australia and many other regions, a trend extended with the emergence of the United States as a superpower in the mid-20th century."

Growth is censored?

In the UK, we have weird dialects, and accents.
For example, people in my area might say: "Ello, yoo allruyt? Where yow frum, Bearmingum? Dudlayy? Lundon? Wayulls? Av yoo sin the babby 'round 'ere?"
Yes, it is weird, say it how you see it.  tongue

Re: English Fail

I don't get why 'growth' is censored either.

(I cheated the filter; I think it's okay to do that in this case.)

Re: English Fail

On the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao in the Caribbean, there is a language called Papiamentu which is spoken by those native to the area. It's a synthesis of English, Dutch, and Spanish. It sounds awesome  big_smile
