I was searching for a particular forum post (which I have been searching for for months, I saw it when I first joined, it was about avatars, it had a link to the website where i made my current avatar), I noticed that the forums (even then) were very clean and on-topic. People have come, gone, come again, then disappeared without any notice (I miss some of the people who used to post then disappeared). For example, if you look on page 97 or even 40 of the show-and-tell forums, you'll find only zero or one off-topic posts. But if you look at, say, page 5, you'll find that more than half, possibly more than 3/4 of the topics there are off-topic.
Another thing to notice is that only off-topic posts get replies. People post, "Who here has Brawl?" it gets at least two pages worth of replies. People post, "(game's name) - my new game!" It gets at most 1 reply unless they're one of the famous Scratchers around. Either they get a post from a forum moderator or admin, who are supposed to reply to topics like that, or they get a post from somebody else saying, "Hey! Have you seen the new Harry Potter trailer!?" (which I have, the minute it came out). People go off-topic waay too much. Only off-topicness actually seems to get replies.
Another thing about the Show & Tell forums is that even the stickied topics are getting (sort of) off-topic. For example, the "information on chatrooms" is fairly off-topic. It was useful when it was posted, but nobody seems to be making chatrooms anymore so it'd be fine to delete. Some topics should be taken off (Critique Groups, Chatrooms, Scratch Story) and others (Jens' Chirp) should be added. I don't like having that many stickied-topics, I liked the old days when there was only one stickied topic, when I joined. Then, TSGU came, which I was fine with: it provided helpful sprites and was still not an overload of stickies. The addition of Project Unknown was helpful, but the two (very similar) topics after it were basically just repeats of the Project Unknown. One's enough, thanks. Eventually, the chatroom trend came out and another topic (about chatrooms) was stickied. Lanie and Bobby500 made the project unknown copies, which were both stickied. TSGU was removed. Joeyman's Scratch Stories topic was stickied. Critique Groups was stickied. Featured Project Proposals was stickied. Too much in my opinion. It clutters up the space, and half of the stickies you don't even need.
So can anything be done about these problems? I'm asking you. If you have an idea, tell me!

Well, I think Critique groups should be stickied because they provide newer users a place to go and get feedback. I didn't know about the featured project, but it seems, as long as they continue doing it (asking for projects), it seems useful. but I agree, Scratch Story shouldn't be stickied, I think we are done with chatrooms now, and we only need 1 project unknown. And I also notice that the off-topic posts get more replies than on topic posts. Fortunately, I go through every topic (except the language ones. Well, even those actually) so I don't see these off topic threads. And spam happens a lot too, mostly from newer users, who post a link to their project on every thread. I agree, Scratch should I an off topic forum for these (to answer the question). I have seen them a lot lately, on Terragen, Sploder, and some others (correct me if I was wrong).

thank you! Is that like, your longest post ever? I haven't exactly seen any super-long posts from you.

Nope. I have had longer. I like making my posts short and sweet with a lot of info, but not so much that you don't wanna read it unless you have nothing better to do. But I do think there needs to be a completely different section (like the language section) about off topic stuff, near the bottom of the page so not to get attention from newer users (so they don't just go and spam there. They need to advertise first!)

I agree with this. I know the books on chatrooms have been closed, but Scratch is such a magnet for kids, and kids like to talk, that I don't think this problem can be solved easily. Some of the info is useful (who doesn't want to beat other Scratchers in Brawl), but we have to learn to draw a line. Remember, you can always report post with the grey "report" link in the bottom right-hand corner of every post (but you know that ).

So to summarize:
1. You feel that the Show and Tell forum area is getting too cluttered.
2. You would like to see a new forum area for random posts so they don't end up in Show and Tell.
3. You feel that Show and Tell has too many Sticked threads and they should be reduced.
Does that pretty much cover it?
You've got some valid points here, in my opinion. I like the idea of a Miscellaneous thread or forum area. Then, I could take all the off-topic posts and move them over there when I come across them. I'm not sure about reducing the Stickied topics, I'd like to hear other opinions.
I'd like to see a new Stickied topic actually...one called "Welcome New Users" which would have links and tips for new users and would be visible from all the forums. Mletreat had a nice post the other day that sort of summarized a lot of new user information...wish I could find it again. I'm putting this idea in the Suggestions forum too.

Yes, that pretty much covers it. And I think it would be a great idea for the welcome new users thread. I'm just saying that a lot of the stickied threads in the show & tell forums are off-topic and some could be deleted.

Yes I see a bunch of posts saying things like they updated a gallery or game. Shouldnt show and tell only be for new projects or galleries? Otherwise if I posted that I made an update on my project I would OWN the show and tell forum. Also people say on show and tell that they are angry because there not "Famous" or don't get enough views. It would definetely be nice if we could sort through all of those useless topics and get to the good ones.

I think that an update to a gallery or game is a valid reason for a Show and Tell post. How else are people going to know that things have changed? A changed gallery might show up in an RSS feed but I don't think an updated project will.

yeah, but they never said that off-topicness was against the terms of use. So you can't report it. To unclutter the show & tell forum space, they should probably make an "off-topic" forum, NOT to promote off-topicness, but to get rid of off-topic stuff in the show and tell forums.

And to help not promote it, it would be below the language forums. Unless you scroll all the way down, you won't see it. And than the mods can just move them there cause it would be unnoticed

Wow, good idea! I never thought of that. And if somebody was really desperate, they could post there, but nobody would really see it because nobody looks below there!

I look there. I go through all of the forums. So naturally, I would look there. But I bet all the off topic posters wouldn't bother. All they would see is:
"moved: My dog is gonna be famous!"
And they wouldn't know where to. And that quote is actually true FYI. 100% my dog will be my dads company's cover dog in Texas. And maybe all the wal marts.

wow... And I look down there too. I made an esperanto topic. But you're the only one who responded looks like no esperanto for Scratch.

One of the things we struggle with is that many kids want their projects to be seen and commented on by the majority... and it would be difficult to entice people to read off-topic forum posts as a topic on it's own. It would be similar to asking people to watch a television channel that only played advertisements - not many would want to watch a channel without any shows.
If others are reluctant to read off-topic posts and the posters are unable to receive the attention they desire, an off topic forum might not reduce the number of off-topic comments elsewhere (like in Show & Tell and All About Scratch).
The real problem could be that we need some additional systems for people who are seeking feedback on projects. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions for features to help support these people better?

I am the harry potter guy. That was on your guestbook, made for that stuff.
Anyway, what there needs to be is stricter enforcment about offtopicness, namley closing those topics, a clear set of rules at the top of the forums, and as mletreat said, more ways for feedback. The critique groups are great. A least viewed section on the front page insetad of surprise projects woukld be godd, as already discussed. I think of some more stuff too.

I didnt mean as much as that. That was just a small example. Most of what Im talking about is both spamming of it, and topics just saying something, not even mentioning a project or gallery.

I also think that the top remixed thing is bogus because people create chain projects that take two minutes and don't really do anything.

Well, in the way of suggestions, I found this topic very interesting-it discusses a possible feature where users can submit projects for review (like the experiment that AndresMH posted about under Show and Tell, only this proposal would call for a new category on the front page).

CoolStuff, I agree 100%. There sould also be an Off-Topic Catagory. When I was a member on RuneScape (when I was 8 years old), I noticed that the Off-Topic catagory really removed a lot of spam on the other catagories.
