Cannot open file: Squeak is low on memory

I have been working on a project for a few months, and it has become exceedingly big, 310MB. Yesterday, when I tried to open it, it came up with an error message saying that Squeak was almost out of memory and it also gave some advice of what to do. I followed it but my file will still not open. I had a look on the forums, and followed the advice on there, including:

1.Set the priority for RAM higher for Scratch.exe.

2.Increase the virtual memory file on your hard disk in the control panel.

I tried both of these things, but it is still not working.

Can anyone help please, this is a very urgent project, I have to hand it in tomorrow, could you please reply ASAP.

Thanks,

Edward

I've done this too. I tried doing this:

Delete bits of scripts you don't need

Put some scripts in other scripts.

If this doesn't work you have only one option:

Make another project containing the other part of the project. Try to import it into your first half, if it doesn't work, convert them into an EXE and hand them in seperately!

Re: Cannot open file: Squeak is low on memory

TornFusion,

Thanks for your advice.

I can't delete any of the scripts because I can't even open the file.

Also, this half of my project isn't finished so I need to access it, I can't just start the next half.

Any more suggestions will be appreciated.

No, I've tried that. It comes up with the reading project bar, stops halfway and then comes up with the pink box saying that Squeak is low on memory. The same thing happens when I try to open the project.

Re: Cannot open file: Squeak is low on memory

Could you maybe try handing it over to someone with more memory so they can reduce its script size?

Don't think I know anyone with a better computer. Her's the specs for my computer anyway:

Acer All-in-One Z5700
Intel Core i3 processor 540
3GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit

The project I'm trying to open is a Scratch 1.4 project with a 310MB file size.

That wouldn't really help. I suggest:

removing files or programs you don't use to make some more space
re-install scratch

Good luck!

What's in the project that makes it 310Mb?

My computer is new, there's hardly anything on it that's not vital for the system. As to reinstalling scratch, I've already tried that. No change whatsoever.

A History of Britain, with 5-10 minute sound recordings for each section of history with synchronised pictures. There are also animations, interactive games and a 2D platformer.

I'd love to, but I can't open it so I am unable to upload it.

Unless anyone has a way to upload a project without opening it?

By the way, does anyone know if you can compress sounds and images in a Scratch project without opening it, or somehow make the file smaller without opening it? My project is so big mostly because of the sounds and images, so I'm guessing if I can do this, I will be able to open it.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Re: Cannot open file: Squeak is low on memory

If the project has a large over-sized script and you scroll down and it freezes, it pulls feathers out of squeak. (Squeak is the scratch supporter, and it's memory is running low) Since squeak won't let you close scratch, open the windows task manager and get squeak damaged and close scratch.
Sometimes a lot of stuff can just cause some of the text to dissapear.
When this happens, close scratch as soon as you can.

How to open squeak: (Link to project) This tutorial is by LS97. He can modify scratch so good!

Re: Cannot open file: Squeak is low on memory

Hmm... This project of yours is really interesting. Too bad I wont be able to play it on scratch. And i'm afraid the tactic of letting someone else compress your project wont work for two reasons:

1. 310MB are difficult to upload and i dont know of many sites which let you do so

2. compressing images only works to save disk space, not RAM. your buffer is most likely to give up on you if you try it

3. (a little extra reason) 3GB of memory shouldnt really be causing a problem with a relatively small 300MB project.

maybe you could try rebooting and ending all processes with the task manager, then opening your project. Also remember to set the CPU and memory usage of squeak to maximum!

Re: Cannot open file: Squeak is low on memory

WHOAH. That's big! The upload limit is only 10MB!

Sorry, but I can't do anything to help. I don't know that stuff. Actually one time, I scrolled down in the script of Line Tennis, and the pink box came up.
