Game Review: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

Game: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Rated: E10+ for mild violence
Star rating: * * * * and 1/2 (out of * * * * *)

When I first got Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, I expected a wonderful, rollicking adventure with many amusing characters and crazy twists.

I got what I came for.

UF is about another adventure of Professor Herschel Layton and his sidekick and apprentice, Luke Triton.  This time, they get a strange letter from none other than Luke...from 10 years in the future.

The Prime Minister has disappeared, along with a scientist by the name of Dr. Stahngun, in the middle of a failed time machine experiment a week before.  The funny thing is...no bodies were found.

Layton thinks it's all linked to a lab explosion 10 years before.

Now, Layton and Luke have to travel 10 years into the future to stop the future Professor Layton, who has become an evil mastermind and rules London with an iron fist.

This edition of the popular puzzle game series fails in only one aspect: disappointing.  The characters are charming and whimsical, the puzzles are challenging but fun, and the mysteries are equally as compelling.  Enemies become friends.  Friends become enemies.  And in the end, everything you thought you knew is turned on its head.

I had an enormous amount of fun trying to solve the puzzles and find hint coins, and a surprise twist at the end made me stare, open-mouthed, at the screen.  Of course, having played Diabolical Box when it came out a few months before, I expected a sad ending.  But this made the end of the last game seem like a kid's comedy.

This game will appeal to both bored teenagers looking for a new game series and old fans of Professor Layton alike.  Only one group I can think of that won't like this game are people who are too lazy to use their brain cells.

I hope you enjoy Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. I know I did.

It was almost like every has the same reaction to the ending. It was so shocking I almost fell out of my chair, even though it was a couch.
