Friends?
I am addicted to programming and as such I usually only go online to check e-mail, take care of business (including teaching an online math class), and update my website which includes posting programs. The point here is that I have not been involved in social networks or social gaming sites so I am a little out of the loop. Soon after I started my scratch account (a couple of days ago) someone made me their friend. Now someone helped me with one of my programs, so I added him to my friend list (the only person I have put on my list so far).
This got me to wondering. What is the point of the friends list? There are a lot of people making good programs that I am interested in or whom I might help. There are a lot of people who might help me with something or who might like my programs. Is there an advantage to putting such people on a friends list?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I am a mother of 3 girls who in the next few years will start to hang out more with their in person friends and they will probably begin to get more active on the internet also. It would be good if I understood more of what is going on out there. As I said before, I use the internet all of the time and I work offline even more, but I have not used it as a social thing (other than to e-mail friends that I don't get to see in person very often anymore).

I'm not sure how you are "supposed" to use the friends list, but I use it to keep track of my favorite Scratchers. If I see a scratch user with good projects, I will usually add them to my friends list. This makes it easy to remember and locate them. Just click on their name in your friends list and it takes you to their projects. I'm sure others use the list differently.

I use the friends list to keep track of good scratchers, about the same as the_guardian. However, I have gotten into a bad habit of adding 70% of the people who add me, even when I haven't seen their projects.

Okay thanks, that makes sense. It would be nice if you could even set up something where you received automatic notification when your friend posted a new project. Of course you want this to be an optional feature so that a person with lots of friends isn't getting too many notifications.

Yes, I was wondering about that too. When someone added me to their friends list after I posted my first project the other day, I was wondering if I should reciprocate. You are correct, though. I probably should only do that, if they seem to making the kind of projects that I am interested in. I am sure there are a lot of people making good quality and worthy projects, but I don't have time to look at them all. I am interested in only a few types:
1.) Simple things that could be useful in teaching scratch programming concepts to my kids.
2.) College Algebra/Trig and above related things that might be useful for inclusion in online math classes at the college where I teach.
3.) Occasionally, I enjoy an actual game also. Mostly I like the logical puzzle types such as Tilt Maze (which was made in Flash). I can't give any examples made in Scratch because I haven't looked for them yet.

At first I used Friends to keep track of Scratchers that I was interested in. But now I use the RSS feeds Subscribe option, since it will notify me when new projects have been created by the people I subscribe too. I use Friends only as a social amenity now.

Another use of the friends list is to (optionally) specify who can add projects to a gallery that you create. I think some after-school clubs and school classes use this technique.
