hmm... that typo makes me think that JD1 actually renamed the file. i'll have to look into that

What do you mean, 'a not .app file on macs because .app files are folders'. .apps are like .exe's except there for mac.

I have a mac with a windows virtual machine. I can confirm both that .app files look like folders in windows, and that they run on a mac like .exe files would on windows. So you are both correct.
