Remixing (Problem)

Lately, I have had a problem with remixing.

On projects OR forums, certain things have been happening. Like stealing ideas. Basically, how far do you take 'remixing'? Is remixing asking to sue the idea and using it? In my opinion not.

My Opinion on what Remixing is: Asking, then using something and expanding it WITH AUTHORS PERMISSION. building off it, learning, sharing and all that jazz.

My Opinion on what Remixing isn't (And what some people think it is): Either:
Liking an idea, so taking it and using it.
Or
Disliking an idea and making something similar that you think is 'better'
Both without permission.

It has annoyed me. For some strange reason, stealing ideas has happened like 10 times more often in the past few weeks. Taking sprites without permission, making duplicate TBGs similar....

And if some people steal an idea, and the creator finds out, their excuse is they were 'remixing'. I think they were using the fact you are allowed to expand on ideas on scratch to their advantage.

I want this problem solved. Maybe write a topic about proper remixing etiquette and improper and then sticky it? Something about art/idea theft?

Now, Mini-Mi or Scratchthatguys, you may think I'm talking about you, but much worse has happened. It is not really you.

Sorry if that thread was wonky. I was typing in a rush.

Question for mods: What would YOU call remixing?

Re: Remixing (Problem)

Remixing is changing, or adding, something to another user's Scratch project.
Thats kind of all. But, you have to give credit to the original, according to the- Uh. I dunno what its called. But, the rules or whatever is all here. But you've probably already read it, seeing that you made this thread and all

Re: Remixing (Problem)

As said by the Scratch Terms of Use, all projects shared on the website are under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic

This policy matches very closely with my views on remixing. I believe one should be able to any project so long as they give credit where it is do. Scratch is a place to learn and anything that prevents remixing hampers people's attempts to learn.

In my opinion, there is no way to "steal" an idea. You can only gain inspiration and learn from others.

You seem to not only to be talking about projects, but also about other things, such as Sprites and artwork. I still feel the same idea applies. As long as the person gives mention to the person whose work they used then they should be allowed to use.

This is just my 2-cents and I'm interested on hearing others on this subject  smile

Oh, and interesting and related quote.

Re: Remixing (Problem)

Well, in my opinion, 'stealing' is using it, but not giving credit, or claiming it as your own.

Re: Remixing (Problem)

I like remixing, but only when the remixer makes a significant change with the previous project.  Copying or remix-chains I don't like.

Re: Remixing (Problem)

I'd say that most of the people who remix a project don't give credit to the people who created the original project but I wouldn't call it stealing.

Yeah. But still, same goes for you, just on a much lighter level.
