Lots of people here have heard of flash. It is generally regarded as a good next language for people interested in online games and animations. It is also seen as considerably harder to learn as a first programming language than scratch.
Since the point of scratch is to be a good *first* programming language, not to be a professional animation program, flash and scratch have different, complementary niches.

Of course everyone has heard of flash. It is true that flash is capable of way more than scratch is but flash is WAY more complex than scratch and would require people to memorize code instead of using blocks.

In Scratch you can make games that have excellent graphics!! for example, Archknights adventure, by Archmage and arcnknight, requim of thunder, by S65,and much more, and most importantly, they're all FUN!!!!!!!!

My dad has heard of Flash (me too ), and says it's very complex and hard to learn, again having to memorize codes other than snapping blocks together.
(ahhh...I remember my dad's first scratch project. A bouncy ball. Programmed all by himself...would've been hopeless if I tried to program that..)

Flash sure is hard to learn cause you have to learn a text-based script-language named ActionScript. It is much more faster than Scratch.
In Comparison to other script languages like in Roblox (http://www.roblox.com/) it is simple. I created some simple Games in Flash a half year ago O,o OK... they suck xD.
If you know some other script languages (no Blocks : O) it will be easy to learn. ActionScript is my 4th Script Language i am capable to code with X.x
And Flash is very expensive. You can get a 30 day trial version on the homepage.
If I had so much pocket-money, I would prefer Flash... but meanings vary
If someone is interested in Flash: You can play much Flash games and movies here:
http://www.newgrounds.com/ (Tutorials are there too)
Don't kill me for mistakes. My English sux x,x

While Flash is a development environment, it's also an animation program, which makes it very expensive. I managed to buy flash CS3 (the latest version) on CampusTech for about $250. Although it does have a very useful assist mode that lets you drag out pieces of code like you do in Scratch, it's still very hard to use. I generally find that combining Flash's animation powers and Scratch's programming environment can yield great results. My advice: Don't even touch ActionScript (Flash's programming language) until you have mastered other easier languages like Scratch!

It's Adobe Flash now, leaving thousands of Macromedia developers slaving away on the next version of the very Photoshop they once despised.

The only problem is that Flash costs $800
It's probably about a MILLION TIMES HARDER TO LEARN THAN SCRATCH, and probably a hundred so than Javascript (not that I've tried learning Flash, but javascript is relatively simple.)
PS is Macromedia the same as Adobe?

Scratch is just a beginning language, though personally, I enjoy it more

I love Flash and I make programs in it all of the time, but my kids aren't ready for that yet. After you get some good experience here in Scratch and decide you want to do more, you may want to learn Flash. You are already learning the logic of programming by working in Scratch. Once you get good at that, and you are ready for more, you can give Flash a try. It helps if you take a class in it to get started. It is harder, but with more difficulty comes more power to do what you want. If you want to see some stuff that I have done in Flash, you can go to my website at http://www.lsquaredmath.us

Here are some excellent tutorials directed at beginners for flash game creation.
I think it is best to read this one first.
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/366346
This one second, learn up to intermediate.
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/344206
Open source game FLAs. These are good for remixing.
http://www.freewebs.com/pyro111/flafiles.htm
Specifics on flash programming.
http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/229808/50
If you are going to learn anything from these it is important to use flash to program the examples in the tutorials so that you can understand how it works. It shouldn't be too hard for a scratch with experience with variables and general coding to get into flash game creation.
I mostly learned flash from newgrounds.com and if you can check out my stuff @ http://archmage-flash.newgrounds.com/
