All the projects by your friends show up on your Scratch home page... So that's a semi-subscribe button.
I don't really want their projects to send me messages, either - I think the current system works just fine

But there is a subscribe button.
I don't want a feed for every Scratcher I want to subscribe to-that's annoying and takes up space.
You don't have to.
Thus, the purpose of a subscribe (or similar) button.

You could add them to your friends list to subscribe to them.

There is a RSS feed for that... just go to http://scratch.mit.edu/channel/friends_latest and 'get' the "
Subscribe" link.

I KNOW! What I mean by Subscribe is having messages sent to your messages if you want it too!

That could put a lot of strain on the server...
