So did I.
The first time I read one, I was really young, so I got really frustrated whenever I'd turn the page, and both pages would be filled up with text, because I was used to reading picture books. My mom raced up the stairs, and asked why I was crying. Good times.

I attempted reading AF at age 7.
I think I remember reading it and understanding it, but I thought it was boring.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. So:
1. The Lorax
2. A Series of Unfortunate Events
3. Maniac Magee, Eggs, and Wringer. (Yeah; #3 is a three way tie.
)

I'm a book FANATIC. I can give recommendations based on your genre preference and age group. It all depends.

Yep. I read all 13 books (And the Beatrice Letters and the Autobiography) in about two months last spring.
(And, I got my older sister to reread the series, and afterward we engaged in a debate about sugar bowls)
I'm, like, the "innest" Grandmother ever, right?

Skullduggery Pleasant Books do ultimately rule. There are quite a few and they are a great read.
Same with Michael Morphurgo (Typo, I think). I love his book 'Private Peaceful'. It's really sad
