A Quick Guide To Starting A Collab

I've never managed to successfully start a collab, but I work quite well on my own. I've gathered tips and knowledge by observing the more successful of scratchers.

1. Have something to show
I don't think you'll be taken seriously if you don't have something. Even just a mockup photo is nice. A title screen is good, but a project is even better.

Build an attorney with Remix Sprite Ace Attorney!

2. Give back to the community
People are more likely to give you a hand if you've given a hand in the past. Bugfixing and modifying projects (big time, not just a name change) can add up. Posting projects goes a long way towards giving back.

The problem with the script is here - you had it set to "Forever, go to x (mouse x) y (mouse y)" when it works better with "Forever, glide .1 seconds to x (mouse x) y (mouse y)".

Here's the splice!

3. Be friendly
This sounds like a well known thing, but do be nice. Comment on projects or posts - constructively! "That's a beautiful flower sprite! The background looks a little off, but I don't think it's that noticeable."

Great idea! The broadcasts will be a little tricky, however.
I do like the idea of being able to share and browse "sites" from  a friend, but it wouldn't be able to be done with plain-vanilla Scratch. You might want to try Panther.

4. Be active
If you post every six months, people don't think you that responsible. Or responsive. It helps to post from time to time (I try for an update every week).

5. Write properly
You score more points with a viewer if you use proper grammar and spelling.

BAD: teh pokeomn game will be awesome lend meh a hnad
Good: If you lend me a hand, we can make an awesome Pokemon game!

6. Write an objective in the collab post
State your objective, clearly.  Don't say "I wan't to make a game", say "I'd like help with building a Mario sidescroller game.". Do try setting a goal date, but don't worry if you have to change it.

Main Objective
The goal is to have a full version of Remix Sprite Ace Attorney, with
working codes, by January 2011, complete with over 17 different bodies and over 16 heads and different poses/animations.

Optional Objectives
- Objection Creator
The idea: have the character point and say the text, with the objection animation going on in the top screen.

- "Chat Mode"
Don't you think it would be cool to use the same idea used in Kriza to allow you to "chat" with a completed character?

- Build A Trial
Allow the player to build defense, witness, defendant and prosecutor for a trial... with customizable speech and evidence.

Do you have something to contribute? I welcome all suggestions, tips  and criticisms.

PS: The "sprite" in the image is a splice between Young Edgeworth and older Phoenix Wright. I recolored the hair and sweater though.

Cool tips, but check your signature for .... A GRAMMAR ERROR UMMAH!!  big_smile

And to Tip 4, what about if you aren't spending all your time on Scratch and you take some time to make a very complicated project?

Re: A Quick Guide To Starting A Collab

Good question. I assume that most would still pop in from time to time - even legendaries like Archmage can be sighted 'trolling around every week or so. I tend to post in increments as I near the goal.

I can understand RL events taking precedence over Scratch, but unexplained and long absences just aren't the style of most Scratchers. Or collabers.

Re: A Quick Guide To Starting A Collab

Just as an aside, I'll be uploading an update tomorrow of Remix Sprite Ace Attorney Demo (version 0.30) that changes the UI and adds in an objection creator. Sweet, right? Anyways... back on topic.

Here's a better reply to your question. You probably won't be offline for a long period of time, even when working on a complex project. I still browse the forums although I'm working on my game.
