Scraps -- A desktop browser for Scratch Resources

Hey everyone,

I wrote an AIR application called Scraps that makes it really easy to upload and download files from Scratch Resources. Check it out here! I, um, actually wrote this over the summer but I finally got my hands on a Mac, and thus the chance to test it on all three platforms. Let me know what you think.

EDIT: I've uploaded the source (it's a series of .fla and .as files, mostly) to Scraps' new Google Code page.

Another update -- Scraps is now working again!  big_smile  You don't even need to download a new version, although I will put out 1.1 pretty soon to fix some internal stuff and address some suggestions. Scratch on! Okay, image uploading still doesn't work, but it should by tomorrow, the 7th

Sounds amazing! I'll try it now.  smile

Mods: Obviously this doesn't belong in Miscellaneous, but it seems like the easiest way to get exposure. Feel free to move this topic!

Sadly, yes. I'll move it now, the redirect link should still get you some attention.  smile

The decline of culture has reached the internet...

Will I need air to run scraps? Just wondering, before I download...

EDIT:

Just read it. I'll see what I can do.

Re: Scraps -- A desktop browser for Scratch Resources

Like JSO said already, thanks for the great widget! This will make Scratch Resources much more accessible and more convenient. I will talk to JSO about adding a link to this on the SR website  smile

I've been a fan of Scraps for a long time. Awesome application! Keep up the good work - and I look forward to future versions.

Thanks, the lack of bug reports here is music to my ears!  big_smile  By the way, if you're curious about the two-month gap between finishing and release, I couldn't replicate your weird Times New Roman glitch until I got my hands on a Mac. It turns out I had embedded the fonts, but none of their characters. Go figure.

Well, I hope you're loving your new Mac. Nice to see you got that glitch sorted out! I'm still a huge fan of this app and pretty much always will be.

Re: Scraps -- A desktop browser for Scratch Resources

yikes  Discovered a minor issue with uppercase file extensions (.jpg vs. .JPG). It's fixed now. You might want to download the newest version, or just change the extension of your files to lowercase before uploading. Sorry!

Re: Scraps -- A desktop browser for Scratch Resources

Whoa, very impressive work sir!  Very handy tool!

(I tested on WinXP.)

Minor ideas/nitpicks:
1. I usually login with just the keyboard: username [tab key] password [enter].  enter does not work.  (I had to use the mouse, oh the horror.  yikes  )

2. Optional auto login may be nice for multiuser computers, "[X] Save login on this computer?" then "Forget username and password" in tray menu.

3. I tried to click and drag from the downloaded list directly... that may be nice to reduce a step.

4. Oh, perhaps: previewing and downloading could be simplified:
a. Click an item to show/play the preview. (no separate item screen needed.)
b. Drag the resource from the list to automatically download (if it has not already. if it has been previewed just move the file from temp to download folder) then load in scratch. (if that's possible.)

5. If I had not watched the screenscast I probably would not have found the "Logout", perhaps also put in tray? (perhaps also show the tray menu when right clicking the app?)

6. I expected the "SR" button to toggle expand and contract. But the close button works too.

But really, this is very, very cool as-is, thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions! I agree that logging in/out could be done better. I originally had implemented something similar to your suggestions #4, but in the end I felt that simpler=better, and I wanted a way to show any long descriptions. AIR does have an obscure interface called IFilePromise that lets you do some of what you suggested, maybe I will take another look at that.

Since I know absolutely zero about programming beyond Scratch, is it Adobe Air you're talking about? (I know it's a stupid question, but that's me XD.)

EDIT: When I tried to download, it said "File not found." Do you know why?

Cool! 1 question: how do you make apps and programs like that? I'm interested.
