Many people are looking for that certain game, piece of art, or maybe that one needed tutorial. My suggestion would be a Categorization System. People (Including you during uploading) can choose what specific category each one of your projects is in. Also the scratch community could help identifying problems, and using a sort of "flagging" for a project wrongly categorized. When a project is flagged, a Project Moderator, or something along those lines would find the project and then put it in its correct category.
Scratch already uses a basic system for finding certain projects: Tagging. Tagging is not to useful because there is no set phrases or words to use. You could put in for example, mario game, but everyone simply searches for "mario". Also improper tags are almost impossible to spot, and use up a lot of valuable time to sort through. If you could choose just one specific category under tiers, it would be much easier to find the game you are looking for. Here is an example of what I mean:
First you go to a link next to Projects labeled "Find a project" or something along those lines. Next you see, games, simulations, art, ideas, music, etc. You then click on games to find: Completed Games, Uncompleted Games. You click on Completed Games. Then there is a list of types of games. Puzzles, Console themed Games, Adventure Games, Classic Games, Shooting Games, etc. You click on puzzles. Then you see: Challenging Puzzles, Easy Puzzles. You click on Challenging Puzzles. Under Challenging puzzles is a list of puzzles based on either views, love its, remixes, etc.
This method could be used for any subject of project, and more subcategories could be made daily. It would be very easy to find a certain project that you want. Also you can pick out project you don't want to see, and you can even search in subcategories.
Possibly, on the top screen there would be a guide. On the guide it would say (based on my example):
Projects>Games>Completed>Puzzles>Challenging>
Each seperate category would be a link sending you to that subcategory. This means of travel through the site would make it much easier not only for visitors, but for members of scratch to further enjoy projects on Scratch.
The Scratch team could choose Project Moderators, based on knowledge of the website, similiar to Forum Moderators. They would have special powers to remove innapropriate projects, move the category of a project, and talk to the Scratch Team about that section of the website.
Here is an overview of some key points:
- Project Moderators
- Categories
- Subclasses
- Links on the top of the page
- Searching inside of Categories
- A Link on the top of the page to get there
- Customizing Search results by views, love its, etc.
Thank you for, looking, and I would love to hear some great feedback. I would also like to improve on this idea, so if anyone has anything to add, please go ahead. Also please dont comment unless you read most of my topic, not just the first paragraph.

I think this is a great idea and very well stated! I would love to be able to categorize projects. We have been discussing this type of capability for quite awhile now in various Forum threads.

Lots of users think it's a good idea but nobody on the Team has committed to providing the capability yet. What do you say, Scratch Team?

Yes, it would be quite a big project, but I think It will be something sooner or later,
necessary because of the large amount of growth in scratch and its projects.

30-45 second read?! Get out! No way that's possible, unless you don't even really understand the information.
I have friends that taught me to read/skim but attain over 90 percent of the info read. Also I just read my whole post in about 1 minute, and noticed I spelled a word wrong and fixed it

It matters. It all has to do with your reading level and speed. I can do it pretty easily.

I remember suggesting this sort of thing before. It would make it easier to find certain types of projects.

Yes, and I dont think it would be to hard. All you have to do is make simple adresses like http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/puzzles/hard/119173 or something along those lines.

Yeah, I was trying to read very fast. Also, so were not off topic, what do you think about the suggestion?

Good ideas. We should talk about this in the conference. I wonder what could be a good taxonomy of categories. Should it be based on something like what libraries use?

If you look at other popular gaming website, addictinggames, miniclip, etc. they all use a very similar taxonomy. Because of the vast types of projects i will believe we should have a section for completed and uncompleted projects. Also we could have a team of either ScratchR's or Project Moderators to update each section accordingly to what is being made. Also we would need to have the team work ahead of time to make a good list of categories and subcategories. Maybe if we had a poll to see what people liked to look through projects on find. If they had a preference in how many views, love its, remixes, etc it had. If they liked to see featured projects fro each particular category? If they only liked looking at completed/uncompleted projects? Also becuase of the amount of projects we would need a big team of Moderators/ScratchR's to constantly look for misplaced projects. Sadly I cannot make it to the conference but i would be glad to talk online with the group of people at the conference.
P.S. If this does become an update I would be glad to help with anything that is needed.

I'm with this now. I think games and interactive projects (and movies) should be top viewed/loved etc. And then theres the ones that inform and things like that (saying you're quitting) which have totally seperate categories for top viewed loved etc

Yes that makes a good point. If you could customize your front page with projects in a certain category for top loved. downloaded, remixed, viewed, etc. I would make the Scratch Homepgae a lot more useful.

i agree with this 100%. sometimes i want to find a certain type of game and i find myself looking through hundreds of projects. Looking up tags doesn't help because so many people put up random tags that i can't find what im looking for. This system would be quick easy and very effecient. It would make scratch a better place. It would also help begginers when they are trying to make a project. they could easily find the same type of game as theres and use that game as ispiration for thier games.
