and random people come onto the forums, post inappropriate stuff or spam useless products, and leave without ever coming back. You forgot that

Well, I don't know if it's all that bad! I do tend to let some off-topic discussion slide by as sometimes it leads to something Scratch related. And too much rigidity tends to turn off the free flow of ideas. But if the general consensus of the user community is that the Forums are getting too sloppy, maybe the Forum Moderators should crack down some. What does everybody think? Let's hear some more opinions!

I'm good with the way things are; there are always going to be forum-trashers and people who just want to bug others. But as websites go, Scratch is squeaky clean, if you'll pardon the pun, Jens. No swearing, very little bullying (actually, I don't see any, but the 34,000 users who leave avery day apparently do), and a relatively small community that allows you to build relationships with other programmers rather than just calling them names. To show you what I mean, take a look at almost any YouTube video and look at the comments list. I guarantee that there will be some really negative comments and/or rude language. Now, I challenge you to find that on any popular Scratch project. One thing about Scratch that's really great is that there are only 20,000 active members, and of those, only about 1,000-5,000 contribute regularly. I'd like to see Scratch grow, but I'd hate to see it become another YouTube.

If you find something you do not like on the forums please click on the "Report" link on that post and explain why you think it is not appropriate. We'll look at it and delete it if we agree.
As for keeping the conversations on-topic, I agree with Paddle2See, being too strict is not always good, but we want to know if you feel like we should have stricter rules.
Thanks!

i think the rules are good, especially because when something "isn't good", members tend and report it if necessary right away

Maybe their could be a chat section of the forums so you could ignore it if you did not want off topic conversations.

Scratch is better than most (if not all) websites. It has a fairly small community if you compare it to other websites like Facebook, MySpace, or even MuggleNet. You actually get to know some of the users and start to memorize peoples usernames and associate it with a personality. E.G, Coolstuff is associated with really awesome (just kidding!). You get the point.
Of course, it does, like on any website, have a few people who just want to trash it and don't even care (or know) about what Scratch is. I saw a forum post saying "I tried downloading a game, but it wouldn't let me play it because I didn't have the correct software. That's really bad, because it was a really good game so I guess you guys should give the software to play these games when you download it". This person obviously didn't know what Scratch was. There are other people (******** and ********** for example) who use it for promotion of other things, specifically chat, and will pretty much go to any extent to spam the forums. For example, ********* kept on making topics about his website. He made at least ten, as I recall it.
But all in all, Scratch is a clean community and I don't think I ever saw a swear word in it, with the exception of VERY inapropriate songs which users posted without knowing the true meaning of it (my teacher especially pointed out what that song meant).

I don't use Scratch for promotion. At that time, I thought that a chat website would be a good idea for Scratch. (Even though I don't like the idea now. he he...) And then (I'm not going to mention names) some users started arguing and making a big deal out of it. Yes, I made 5 topics, but I didn't realize there was a delete button and could've deleted the other ones. And no, I won't go to any extent to get off-topic... I post good topics, and I only OCCASIONALLY spam by accidentally going off-topic. I am against spam!
