Well I had this really old computer (Windows 2000 NT), and I was thinking of wiping it, but I didn't know where any of my old boot disks were, so I realized, "Hey, Linux is free, right?"
So I made a boot disk and installed Ubuntu/Linux on the computer and I am typing from it now. I don't know if it will ever shutdown properly, but oh well.
Now I just have to figure out how to use Wine and generally the entire system. But first I need to go to bed because I have school again tomorrow >:C
Hey, remember this? Well I quickly found that despite its praise from a lot of the people here, Ubuntu/Linux is a very impractical system, which is why I found a Windows 98 installation disk and am now using that. It was incredibly slow, but that was probably because the physical computer is about 10 years old anyway. The inability to shut off by itself was only a minor hindrance seeing that there is practically nothing that I wanted to use that's made for Linux, and the one thing I could find needed an installer to install the installer for the program.
Not to mention when I wanted to wipe the hard drive so I could put WIN98 on it, it took me about half an hour of looking for a command (that worked, I tried about 15 different ones) before I booted it off a DOS prompt and used that.
So to form this into an actual topic and not just a place for Linux users to yell at e about how awesome they think it is, I pose this question:
Do any of you have computers with outdated operating systems? I chose Windows 98 because that's what I need to play my old Myst games.

If you include disassembled ones, yes BIG TIME. We have about 3 sets of outdated computer parts.
Also we have a AMD Athlon XP-based comp that is fully assembled that used to have XP SP2 on it, but it now has Ubuntu 8.10, which I guess is somewhat outdated.

Oh hah I didn't even think about disassembled/broken ones. There's this 2-inch thick one I have that broke so far you had to use a floppy boot disk every time because it only had a floppy drive and it couldn't find the hard drive. That worked for some fun retro games for a while until the floppy drive stopped working as well. xD

I have no idea what any of you are talking about...
So here's a bunny with a pancake on it's head :D
Can someone explain to me wha we are exactly talking about? I know have two old computers, but I don't know what to say about them

Oh yeah, I've got an old clunky Compaq running on Windows 98. It's no longer any good except for playing old games like "Lego Loco" or "Operation Neptune".

I have plenty of old computers:
-Windows 3.1 computer that no longer works (I have it in a virtual machine though)
-Windows 95 computer that no longer works (is in a virtual machine as well)
-Windows 98SE computer
-Dell Inspiron 5000 Windows 98SE laptop
-Windows XP computer (pretty old, my dad still depends on it but it's getting less reliable)
-Another Windows XP computer (not used very much anymore; was specifically for gaming until we got a Vista computer)
-Fujitsu WinXP laptop (my dad's old work laptop)
-Another Fujitsu WinXP laptop (my dad's even older work laptop)
And that's all, I think.
I think just about all of these are home-built (except for the laptops, obviously).

Yeah, you need certain machines for each era of gaming or else there will be compatibility issues.
For software problems, I have my solution. It is Sun (now Oracle) VirtualBox loaded with loads of OSes.
List:
Win NT 4.0 Server
Win 98
Win XP
Win 2000
Ubuntu 8.10 (the odd one out, huh?)
With my physical compy loaded up with Win 7.
Of course, this only works if your dad has swarms of OS install disks, or trust online ISO files.

Ok, not to rant about you giving up on Linux or anything, but for a computer that old you need puppy Linux.
Anyway, I have a 5 year old Dell running puppy Linux, a eight year old gateway running zenwalk, a Dell made for 95 running 98 a iMac g3 running os9 and an iMac g3 running panther. Not to mention my 3 year old snow leopard using intel Mac and my four month old ubuntu and windows 7 running Asus.
