That is a good trick, but brightness might take a while. And spiders that are trying to get you at night will continue in the morning, other than just being harmless. Best thing to do is just quickly dig a small shelter and light it up. making several small shelters around where you work when you are not near your main house is a good security idea.
Meh, it takes ten minutes, I've measured. Also it is the best trick of night safety for n00bs like me who can't find coal.
Also, I found coal, it's just that I've mined three blocks and nothing came from them.

With your hand or with a pick? Coal must be mined with at least a wood pickaxe.
