On Blade-Edge's thread, people started asking for help, so I started this so the other thread would be cleaner.
So basically, if you need help, just ask! I have been playing Alpha for only 2 weeks, but I know a lot. Below, you will find a short tutorial.
Tip: If you want all this information and more Wikipedia style, go here.
First Game Tutorial:
When you first start out, you want to gather 3 things: wood, stone, and coal. With the wood, you can make sticks and a workbench(see #1). Stone will make better weapons, and make a furnace(see #3). Coal, when added to sticks, makes torches. Torches make light which make sure that monsters won't spawn around you.
Now that you have these things, you want to protect yourself from monsters. To do this, build a house. Above or below ground doesn't matter. For an easy entrance, craft a door(see #4). Place torches in your house to light it up and keep monsters from spawning there.
You want to make sure that your house is near resources. Pick a location near a lot of trees, coal, and stone. Also make sure it is close to your spawn, and visible from far away. If your house is above ground by a lot, or the same for below ground, make ladders(see #5).
Three Necessities:
#1 Workbench
Get wood. Turn it into processed wood. Go into your inventory. Go to the crafting area and fill up all the boxes with wood. Now you have a workbench!
#2 Chests
Get more processed wood. Go to your workbench. Fill up all the squares except the middle one. Do this twice. Now you have to chests. Place them next to eachother for increased space.
#3 Furnace
Get cobblestone(stone that you have mined). Go into your workbench. Arrange them in the same way you did for your chests. Now you can burn coal(or flint and steel) and cook meat or smelt ores.
Helpful Stuff
#4 Door
To make a door, get processed wood. Go to your workbench and place the wood in all the squares except the last column(going sideways). Basically, make a rectangle 2 squares wide, and 3 long. Now you have a door! Place it anywhere, and right click it to open and close it.
#5 Ladder
To make a ladder, you need 7 sticks. Arrange them in your workbench so that they fill every square except the top and bottom square of the middle row. basically, make an H shape. Now, place the ladder on an elevated surface. Go up to the ladder and hit the forward key. Now, you can go up, or down!

And it is complicated at times, but it is super fun

How do I set people on fire?
You mean zombies and stuff? Well, zombies and skeletons get set on fire when in sunlight, I don't know how to manually set things on fire.

Well. IF you make a zombie go on a torch, I thinkit gos on fire. It doesn't work on people though.
Well, zombies react similar to humans, except the sun thing. Since we don't get damaged from the torches, I don't think they do either.

This whole topic? Okay...Yeah, considering that there is no tutorial on Minecraft and you start out with nothing, help is pretty...helpful.

um let me make a suggestion, this topic should be on strategies or methods of mining and surviving in minecraft, crafting is all on the wiki, so just leave a link to the wiki for the crafting, smelting, and block info

It was an impulse buy xD. I saw videos of it, and it looked cool, so I thought "Why not?"

Creepers? They look like slimes, and are out even during the day. But they only blow up on contact, so stay out of the way, and you won't get attacked. But, skeletons shoot anything, including creepers, so be careful always. If a skeleton kills a creeper, you get a record which can be played in a record player.

Also, a nifty trick - when it starts getting dark, climb to the top of a tree and stay till it get light. No monster gets you there.

That is a good trick, but brightness might take a while. And spiders that are trying to get you at night will continue in the morning, other than just being harmless. Best thing to do is just quickly dig a small shelter and light it up. making several small shelters around where you work when you are not near your main house is a good security idea.
