Featured Projects

Perhaps people who think their projects are good enough to be featured should post the links here, so it's easier for the admins to find good projects without trawling through millions of others

Re: Featured Projects

This is a great idea, but I feel like people are just going to ask for their own projects to be featured.  Does anyone like the idea of nominating other peoples projects?

Re: Featured Projects

These are some projects by other people which should be featured:

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Jens/13629
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Mayhem/21825
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/VincentValentine/9803

The third project is possibly the most complete game I've seen made with Scratch.

My best projects:

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/S65/22439 (Dogfight 3D)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/S65/22081 (Thief Final Version)

As a game, Dogfight 3D is much better than Duck Hunt even if it is short.

Re: Featured Projects

Well my best, which is my biggest, in my views should be featured.  Although
everyone probaly thinks their's should be featured.  But in my eyes, it is a
lot diffrent then most.  It has few glitches and many games!  It has a story
and Pong, Pacman, Paint, Colors, Desktop Background, JustTunes, Duckhunt, Internet!

Come check it out!  http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Nick60/27754

Re: Featured Projects

I love simple projects with a single cool idea, a funny punch line or an inspiring way of dealing with things way better than (my own) giant overblown works. Therefore I nominate:

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Trtlpowr/19043 (a really cool bass tutorial)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Mayhem/24412 (a brilliant idea for a simple calculator)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Digimath/27783 (one of the best puzzles, oven though I don't understand exactly how he programmed it)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/calixtemayoraz/7619 (older, but I haven't seen anything nearly as funny ever since, don't know if it has been featured in the past)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Larry828/27150 (funny, yet simple and elegant)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/chalkmarrow/15218 (funny and brilliant)

Here are some I like:

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/relyt12101/27793 (my flagship product)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/paulmedwal/547 (just amazing work)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/chrisg/3485 (something simple can be very fun)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/fab_programmer123/7610 (again, amazing.)
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/toontownmiser/27140 (THE BEST scratch OS)

Re: Featured Projects

What is the intent behind the featured projects?  Is it to show off unique projects or help kids get exposure that they wouldn't otherwise get?

I really think it should be that you can't nominate your own projects.  It seems like the show and tell section of the forums should be good exposure for people that want to self promote their own projects.

Re: Featured Projects

I think that the "Featured Projects" list was originally for the scratch team to show examples of what they thought were good uses of scratch.  The selection was idiosyncratic and did not have any hidden meaning---just that someone on the scratch team wanted to give the project more visibility.

Being featured makes a huge difference in whether a project gets seen by many people, so now programmers are clamoring to be featured.

I suspect that the "featured projects" list has favored younger programmers a bit, as a way of encouraging them to continue, not getting depressed that they aren't doing things as complicated as some of the professional programmers who are playing with scratch.  I think that is a good thing---I'm more pleased to see one of my student's projects being featured than I would be if one of my projects is featured.

i think we should put a nominate link, vote for one of your projects once a week and others once a week to, or something like that. theres so many projects on here that are never noticed. if we put a nominate link then people who saw good projects can nominate for them. you could also put a link to that project so others can veiw it and see what they think

Re: Featured Projects

I think that my Mac OS 9 project should be featured. It has over 400 views, 12 people love it, and there has been 37 downloads. I have seen some featured projects with stats like that and I was hoping that that my Mac OS 9 Project could be featured.

Having a nominate button wouldn't necessarily(spelling?) work, if the object of having a project featured is to make it more visible and increase it's views, projects that get nominated the most will be ones with lots of views.

I suggest that projects should be automatically* nominated if it has been online for 'x' days and has had less than 'x' many views. This would mean that underviewed projects would be featured.

SB

*Yes, you would probably need some kind of screening process but I can't think of one now!

Re: Featured Projects

It would be good to add a "Chosen Projects" Section on the front page. The "Featured" are chosen by the Scratch Team, and the "Chosen Ones" will be chosen by the Scratch members!   wink

Re: Featured Projects

The "top loved" is the "chosen ones" already.  Some other mechanism is needed to get ones that are currently overlooked into circulation.

I think that having galleries that are really edited magazines, in which an editor carefully chooses what projects to include, will help a lot, in that people could find galleries that had stuff they liked and keep going back to them to find out what the editor has added.
Having "subscribe to gallery" mean that you get informed whenever anything is added to the gallery would also be useful (more useful than whatever it really means now).
