I think it would be a good idea to add the ability to create your own blocks, like BYOB! It would help if we wanted to make our own functions! Does anyone else like this idea?

That's what BYOB is FOR right?
Of course, if custom blocks were incorporated into the main scratch applet, then you would be able to upload projects with custom blocks. The blocks could be unique to the project, all the code and stuff for the blocks would be IN the project. Of course it might bump up the file size, but that's what you have to pay for an epic new feature. ^^

It's a great idea, but I doubt it will be implemented. Scratch was supposed to be easy to learn. If you want advanced, try Panther or BYOB.

Or they could use the Basic Mode - Advanced Mode concept, where if people want/need more stuff, they turn on Advanced mode.
That's been a suggestion in the past, but it's mostly been shot down because it would cause a rift in the community.

I believe I suggested this a fair bit ago:

However, fullmoon brought up a great point in that topic:

So I just don't really agree anymore
EDIT: Ninja'd for the first time in ages!

Well, if it was put into Scratch 2.0, then Panther or BYOB would be no longer needed, and you could upload to the server, like someone said. I know it will take longer to come out with, but would you like it so you can make your own functions, blocks, and more? I know about BYOB and Panther, but you can't upload to a server! It just compiles them into an application, and I can't do it because I run on Ubuntu! Wine on Ubuntu, I can't get to work, so I can't use Panther or BYOB! The Windows Application installer uses a CD, but I don't want to put a CD in, so the only possible place to get it is on Scratch!

Ah - well - the Scratch Team have mentioned that something similar to that will be in 2.0, or at least, they'll play around with that. We'll see what the final version entails.

I think the Scratch team is thinking aboutit, but if you really want to BYOB, use BYOB 3. It's beyond awesome.

They're not just thinking about it, they've committed to it

Can you show me where they said so? I want to see it with my own eyes.
Or was it on Scratch Suggestions? I think a suggestion got highly ranked, and they gave a comment saying it was going to be done...

I looked at all the accepted suggestions and it wasn't there...

We like to leave our options open, but as far as I know, procedures (create your own block) is high on the list - mostly accepted. Still, this won't be released until we are finished transitioning to Flash. Once that is done, we'll move in the direction of adding new blocks and features.
