Just explore, you'll find some. Or strip mine dirt with your bare hands, in a 20x20 area of stone, there has to be at least 1 coal.

I freaking died.    A monster sneaked up on me.

First, make a house!!! Dig 2 layers under ground, and close it off with a door. Keep torches in there so monsters don't spawn in there. Wait until morning. Then go to caves. Almost always you'll find a cave above ground that has coal. And if you want to fight some zombies, make a sword 

BTW, if you need help, just ask, I am sort of a guru at Minecraft

Next thing you want to do is make 3 things: a workbench, 2 chests, and a furnace.

1. Workbench
Get wood. Turn it into processed wood. Go into your inventory. Go to the crafting area and fill up all the boxes with wood. Now you have a workbench!

2. Chests
Get more processed wood. Go to your workbench. Fill up all the squares except the middle one. Do this twice. Now you have to chests. Place them next to eachother for increased space.

3. Furnace
Get cobblestone(stone that you have mined). Go into your workbench. Arrange them in the same way you did for your chests. Now you can burn coal(or flint and steel) and cook meat or smelt ores.

Go in the morning...well, afternoon. That's when spiders leave. Or make a sword and fight them off    And when they do leave, get a large supply of wood so you don't have to go everyday.

Starting tips:
Travel around until you find coal. Dig some dirt and build a fortification there. If you're just going for survival, dirt:water:dirt:water:dirt is a great defense (anti creeper, cheap, all you need is 3 iron and dirt). If you know something is around, get rid of the lower layer of your wall and punch its feet.
