Automatically adding credits

We have added a nice feature that automatically extracts the history of a project and adds a link to the project in which it is based on.

For example, I downloaded ericr's project and I uploaded it again and it shows:
"Based on ericr's project". See it running here:

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/andresmh/27229

Let me know what you think about it.

Cool  big_smile  But Dancingqueen has a point.

Hello Scratchers!  Please check out my "Invisible Children" project.  I created it to raise awareness about the children in Uganda, Africa.  The film "Invisible Children" is very moving, yet inspiring.  I hope that I can inform as many people as I can about The crisis in Uganda.  Thank you  smile   Here is the link http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/plumberry/135831

Re: Automatically adding credits

Download the project Andres posted and re-upload it and you will see that ericr's name is still listed.

Re: Automatically adding credits

I mean, couldn't you just like create a whole new file, export some sprites, and copy some scripts?  Since it's a whole new file, the "Based on ...." wouldn't still show up, would it? You download the project, copy some scripts onto paper, export some sprites, and then just delete the file you just downloaded. But since you have the scripts and sprites, you can create the whole project again, just this time, it won't have "Based on......"...(I think).

Re: Automatically adding credits

True - but that's a lot of work.  The kind of people who download a project then submit it under their own name without crediting the originator are not interested in work!

Questions:
Will this list all of the modifiers of a project or just the original creator?
If the former, will this list the same person more than once if they modified it several times?

Re: Automatically adding credits

andresmh: That's a very useful feature! I like the tenis like moding at Scratch. Could you also create a feature to count and link the mods of a project? There could also be a lists of  "most moded projects". I think this would increase the programming-interaction and co programming projects at Scratch and so strengthen the Scratch Community. This could even be much more important than to cure the struggle about "forgotten credits".

Good examples for co programming are:

From "Robot Battle" to "ROBOT BATTLE (S65's Entry)"
First:  http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Mayhem/26927
Second: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/S65/26977

or from "Pianist " to "Combo"
First:: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Jens/12908
Second: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/MartinWollenweber/13432
Third:  http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Jens/13629

or from: "spinning drum machine" to "Spinning Lines and Bouncing Balls"
First:: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/MartinWollenweber/1554
Second: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/jsimone/18253

or from  "Bouncing Balls" to "Bouncing Balls with Soundcolor"
First: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Canthiar/7369
Second:  http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/MartinWollenweber/8708

or from  "kaleidoscope starter" to "kaleidoscope plus"
First: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/ericr/2079
Second: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/MartinWollenweber/20407

I bet Erics "Kaleidoscope Machine" http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/ericr/626 is the most moded project,  but I would like to see the number of mods and easy link to them.

Re: Automatically adding credits

Will it do it to all projects? Someone copied my racing car game and called it streetracer, will it now say based on llamalover's project?

Re: Automatically adding credits

Good job! But I have already seen an error - Hazzadude's copy of winuseless (real maker - Eyvind and Ebba) does not show the copy thing.

Re: Automatically adding credits

The reason why Hazzadude's project doesn't display that information is because the project was deleted/censored before the new system to add credits was implemented.

Re: Automatically adding credits

relyt12101 when I go to http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/hazzadude/21452 I don't see hazadude's project,  I see the cat saying "this project has been censored...". Is that what you see?

If not, I think it is cached by your Java VIrtual Machine. If you clear the cache of your JVM it should go away.

Re: Automatically adding credits

I think that if someone wants, they should be able to make it so if someone bases somthing off one of their projects and it say so, they can make it so it dosen't. Do you get   what I'm saying? Probably not......  sad

Wodunne: are you suggesting that users should be allowed to disable the "Based on" section?

Re: Automatically adding credits

yes, but only the user that its based on. Heres another way to say it: Say you see a project that was based on one of yours. If you want, you should be able to disable the "Based on" so that it dosn't mention you.  Am I being clear enough? if not, the never mind.

Re: Automatically adding credits

I think Wodunne's suggestion for allowing the "Based on" creator to take their name off makes sense. For example, if someone took your project and turned it into something objectionable to you, you wouldn't want a link to it from your own project.
