Online scratch project testing

I've seen enough projects on this site to realize that things are not the same online as they are offline. However, I recently used a similar program which let you preview the projects in the web browser instead of in the program. People who tend to use the "wait [ ] secs" block, one that varies from offline to online, would benefit from this as well as programmers who would like to see how fast their projects would run online or if it's even playable.

I'm not a Squeak expert, so I have no idea how easy it would be to implement this, but it seems like it can only benefit those who use Scratch, and by that I mean that it would work for both animators and programmers in a great way.

I hope the Scratch Team will consider this, and I also hope that someone can put it on that Suggestions part of the site because I can't figure out how to use it.

That sounds great
We should have that
*thumbs up*
There's something like that in a map editor I use for some game
It checks if things would work online

You won't have to worry, the next version of Scratch is going to be made if flash and used online.

But wouldn't flash mess with backwards compatibility and generally nullify all Scratch Mods? The idea of using Squeak to base all the blacks off was what enabled this, and turning to flash would certainly change pretty much everything.

I believe that ScratchReallyROCKS is talking about the online version of Scratch that is written in Flash (there is an experimental viewer that you can try out); the goal of which is to make Scratch readily available online so it's easier to design and remix projects without the need for downloading Scratch; because Scratch can be executed online, issues between offline and online versions is less of an issue.

It's not to say that Scratch will suddenly switch to being only used online. There will still be an offline version available to download. Scratch in Flash has been an issue before brought up by those who modify the original Scratch program, but rest assured, it will not make the modifications obsolete (url=http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=44058]see here[/url]).

As for your suggestion: I think it would be pretty cool to have a way to test the behavior of our projects in a browser as opposed to the normal presentation mode.  smile

Re: Online scratch project testing

I think S65 made a Scratch to EXE type of program that uses a browser to play a project, but I'm not sure if it was working or if it is the same as a project being played online.

Great idea! While it won't necessarily be needed when Scratch turns to Flash, I think it would be great to see how Scratch acts in a browser as opposed to a desktop application, like Cheddargirl said.
